Combined YW/YM Christmas Activity: Coming Unto Christ from His Birth to His Resurrection

After being put in as a new young women presidency we had to get to work planning activities. One of the activities we planned was a for our young women and young men combined Christmas activity.  In thinking what we could do I came across an activity that was a nativity progressive activity.  I loved the progressive idea and in thinking and praying about it the thought came that the 2014 mutual theme is "Come Unto Christ".  What a great way to end the year and focus on the Savior!  I brought the idea to the rest of the presidency, they liked it so we planned it. With a great suggestion from our bishopric we invited the youth to help in presenting at each progressive activity.  We recently had this activity and I am so grateful for the youth's participation! It brought the Spirit to the activity. Here is the outline of what we did, feel free to use it as inspiration and modify it to the needs of your own youth.

Young Women Christmas Activity: How Mary Exhibits all of the Young Women Values

We had a wonderful combined Young Women activity this month.  Upon trying to think about what we could do I came upon the post "I Want to Be More Like Mary" by the Red Headed Hostess. It was the perfect inspiration we needed to plan our activity!

Family Home Evening on Family Christmas Movie Night

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

Family Christmas Movie Night

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Further preparation: Pop popcorn, make or buy treats, pick out a movie

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Sometimes for Family Home Evening it is fun to just have a relaxing fun night as a family. Pop some popcorn have some treats and enjoy each others company.  For our family we have some Christ centered videos. I am planning on having my family choose one of these to watch tonight. Or you could just simply watch a fun Christmas movie your family enjoys.  Here is a link to some Christ centered videos: Christmas Videos.

After the movie, you could invite family members to share their feelings about the movie or the time spent watching the movie together.

Close with a Family Prayer.

Looking for a fun Recipe?? Abelskivers!

Here's a fun recipe handed down in my Family! Abelskivers!!!

This is a family favorite! My grandma, whose parents are from Denmark, used to make these for us, when we would come to visit.

Then my mom started making them, we would have them every year around Christmas/New Years time and any other time we could talk/beg her into making them!! Just the other day she made them and the whole batch was gone in seconds!

So when we got married, what did we receive??? A cast iron Abelskiver pan, so we could carry on the tradition. My kiddos thank her for it, because I think it may be their favorite now too!!

Here are the directions on how to make Abelskivers (A recipe handed down through my family from Denmark)

Ingredients:

3 eggs (separated)
2 cups of Flour
2 cups of Buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. nutmeg

Directions:

Separate the egg whites from the egg yolks. Place the egg whites in one bowl and the egg yolks in another. Beat the egg whites until they are nice and fluffy forming a peak.

In another bowl, sift in flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Mix in the egg yolks, buttermilk and sugar. After mixing together, fold in the beaten egg whites.

Over Medium/High heat warm-up an abelsiver cast iron pan. Spray with cooking spray, or place little dabs of butter in each slot.

Scoop in enough batter into each slot so it is 3/4 full. Each pan and each stove is going to be different as to how long it is going to take to cook before turning and heat may need to be adjusted up or down. It is kind of a trial and error kind of thing when it comes to making the perfect abelskiver, because you want them to be done on the inside but not too done on the outside.

Take a tooth pick and use it to help turn your abelsiver to the other side. Cook until done. You may want to cut the first ones open to make sure they are done on the inside.

Top with butter and then either sugar, cinnamon sugar, or jam!

You will love these!!!

What traditional recipes do you have???

My 2014 Stake Conference Talk: How Social Media Can Help Strengthen our Testimonies and Help us Hasten God's Work

A couple Saturday evenings ago, I had the opportunity to speak in the evening session of our Stake Conference. About two weeks before the experience I had received a phone call by a member of our Stake Presidency.  Actually, he had called twice and had left a voice message, stating he'd like to chat. As I drove home after listening to the voice message my mind was a flurry of thoughts. First I analyzed the phone call and determined that he said "chat", not visit. So that would mean probably not a calling. Then, I thought about Stake Conference coming up. When that thought came to mind, I was pretty much sure that it was probably something in regards to it. Then I thought about how I had just became Facebook friends with the Stake President just days earlier.  When I returned home, I did call the member of the Stake Presidency back. My suspicious were correct, I was being asked to speak in Stake Conference and it was thanks to Social Media.  Although it might not have been a direct result as to becoming Facebook friends with the Stake President, I was being asked to give a 15 minute talk about Social Media and Blogging.

Nativity Christmas 2x4 Block Decoration and Ornament

As a Young Women Presidency we were thinking about what would be a fun little craft for the Young Women to make at our Christmas party.  So, I designed this block that would be easy and fun for the girls to make. It is an all in one, so that means there is no vinyl to have to work with. Just a little paint and some modge podge.  I love it because it is something the girls can keep for years to come and it can remind them of the true spirit of Christmas. This craft would be great for friends, neighbors, Visiting teaching, etc...
