 BRIGHTEN SOMEONE'S DAY WITH A SMILEY FACE CARD!

A few month's ago I had this thought that I needed to write cards to my kids and leave them with a treat on their beds. I remember sometimes my mom would leave little notes on my bed growing up and how it made me feel. So, I made these smiley face cards and wrote some personal messages in them of how wonderful I think they are.

Years ago, when I was serving in Young Women's we did a combined Young Women & Young Men activity. It was a Random Acts of Kindness Race. One of the items each group needed to do was go to the temple, wash some windows and leave a card. It is one of the many service activities that I remember.

I have the opportunity to work with a group of teenagers at the local junior high school. It is the funnest thing! Our goal is to make the school and community a better place. So, when we were thinking about what to do for the month of February, I came up with these Kindness Punch Cards. The purpose is to focus on building healthy relationships and focus on spreading kindness.

Combined Youth Service Activity: More than 25 Ways the Youth can Share Their Lights and #LIGHTtheWORLD

Wondering how you, your children, or your youth group can take part in the 2016 Christmas Initiative to #LIGHTtheWORLD? Then this post is for you..

One thing that I absolutely love about serving with the youth is that they have a special kind of light. The youth can have a great influence on those around them, especially their peers. This month our deacons quorum was in charge of our combined mutual activity and they decided to do a service project. Which just so happened to provide a perfect avenue to introducing the Christmas Initiative for this year, by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The initiative is #LIGHTtheWORLD.

Relief Society: Simple Service Ideas that Even Kids Can Do!

In patterning our life after the Savior's we should seek for opportunities to serve those around us.  In Mosiah 2:17 it states, "...when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God." As Relief Society sisters, we have tremendous opportunity to watch out for those around us that need that loving hand of help. When we feel impressed to help someone we need to listen to those promptings and act upon them. We can provide service to others individually or we can do this as a family. Teaching our children the importance of unselfishness, love, and sacrifice. One thing that we did with our kids a few months back was thirty days of service.  Each day we did an act of service for thirty days. It was fun to see them serve others and discuss the happy feelings we each individually felt from doing so.

Here are some ideas:

In Need!

It seems like there are so many people in need right now.  But with the devestation in Haiti, their needs are brought to the spotlight.  Here are ways that we can help: Check with local schools and churches many are having drives and clothing donation boxes right now.  Also contacting the American Red Cross or the United Way and finding out ways to help.*** Always make sure you trust the place you are donating too, it's sad but there is fraud out there.

Service Opportunity for December

In December it seems like there are a lot of opportunities out there to provide service.  So much sometimes that it might be a little over whelming. The key is to just do what you can and you will be blessed for doing that.  Here are a few ideas of ways that you can serve:

• Help a neighbor prepare or deal with the cold weather (shoveling snow, winterizing yard, etc)
• When making Christmas treats make up an extra plate and visit someone who is alone.
• Treat others with kindness, especially at this busy time of year. It is amazing how just a friendly smile and a "Happy Holidays" can be a service to someone.
• Schools are always in need of volunteers.
• Do a small "sub- for- santa", drop off some groceries to someone who is in need.
• With it being cold weather I am sure the homeless shelters are always in need of donations.
• There are many many more things that you can do! Just think of something and then act upon it.

**Remember it is the thought that counts! Just do what you are able. Try to make someone's holiday a little bit nicer.

Service Opportunities

This month I am going to focus on giving to thrift stores. When you give of your stuff to thrift stores it goes a long way. You are helping to provide jobs to those in need. The items you donate are sold at low prices. At the Deseret Industries it goes even further, merchandice can be purchased by the public at low costs and for those who are in need, it is offered at no cost. By donating items to be reused you are also keeping stuff out of the land fills. I have a friend who spoke to her children before Christmas one year and asked them to go through their toys and pick out some toys that they could give to the Deseret Industries. She told them that there were other children out there that would like a Christmas too, and by giving of their toys it would make it possible for their moms and dads to be able to afford toys for their children. What an amazing lesson to teach your children. So go through your house and look for stuff you just don't use anymore and take it into your local thrift store.

What a remarkable thing service is! It is nice to be on the receiving end of the service, but even greater to be on the giving end. Throughout my life I have had the opportunities to provide service for people around me. It is such an amazing thing to see someone in need and be able to help them out. Everyone will be in need of something sometime in their lives.

I know that it seems like this time of year service and giving is really pushed. I don’t think that people should feel guilty if they can’t give to every organization that is asking for funds. It is great to do if you can, but there are many other ways to provide service to others. I looked up the word service on the web and it is defined as: “work done by one person or group that benefits another” and “an act of help or assistance”. So when ever you are doing something to help, assist or benefit another you are providing service. I want to take it even further and say that service is giving without wanting anything in return, including not wanting acknowledgment.

In my ward primary I was able to teach some youth about service. We made a club, called the Secret Service Club. To be a member of our club you need to provide secret acts of service. I am excited to here of their experiences and feelings they felt while serving.

Service does not have to be something huge or spending a lot of money. It can be as simple as opening a door for someone, or being a friend and lending a listening ear. There are many resources out there to help you find ways to serve. Schools are always looking for volunteers.

Service is a very important thing in our church (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints). We believe that we are all brothers and sisters and are our Father in Heaven’s children. In Mosiah 2:17 it states: “And behold, I tell you these things that ye may learn wisdom; that ye may learn that when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God.” (Book of Mormon)
