Healthy Pumpkin Seed Snacks Recipe, Perfect for Game Day!!
One of our family's favorite healthy snack's this time of year are pumpkin seeds!! Whenever we carve up our pumpkins we make sure we make a batch. The recipe we use is a family secret that I am about to let you in on it... hopefully that's okay with the family, right! What a great snack to have as you are cheering your favorite team on during football season!!
Looking for a fun Recipe?? Abelskivers!
Here's a fun recipe handed down in my Family! Abelskivers!!!
This is a family favorite! My grandma, whose parents are from Denmark, used to make these for us, when we would come to visit.
Then my mom started making them, we would have them every year around Christmas/New Years time and any other time we could talk/beg her into making them!! Just the other day she made them and the whole batch was gone in seconds!
So when we got married, what did we receive??? A cast iron Abelskiver pan, so we could carry on the tradition. My kiddos thank her for it, because I think it may be their favorite now too!!
Here are the directions on how to make Abelskivers (A recipe handed down through my family from Denmark)
Ingredients:
3 eggs (separated)
2 cups of Flour
2 cups of Buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
Directions:
Separate the egg whites from the egg yolks. Place the egg whites in one bowl and the egg yolks in another. Beat the egg whites until they are nice and fluffy forming a peak.
In another bowl, sift in flour, baking soda, baking powder, nutmeg and salt. Mix in the egg yolks, buttermilk and sugar. After mixing together, fold in the beaten egg whites.
Over Medium/High heat warm-up an abelsiver cast iron pan. Spray with cooking spray, or place little dabs of butter in each slot.
Scoop in enough batter into each slot so it is 3/4 full. Each pan and each stove is going to be different as to how long it is going to take to cook before turning and heat may need to be adjusted up or down. It is kind of a trial and error kind of thing when it comes to making the perfect abelskiver, because you want them to be done on the inside but not too done on the outside.
Take a tooth pick and use it to help turn your abelsiver to the other side. Cook until done. You may want to cut the first ones open to make sure they are done on the inside.
Top with butter and then either sugar, cinnamon sugar, or jam!
You will love these!!!
What traditional recipes do you have???

Discuss any family business
Scripture: D& C 138:47-48
Printout the printables above and cut everything on the second page out.
Tell your family that you are thinking of a place. This place is one of the most important places here on earth. See if your family can guess this place. If they can't, continue with giving the clues. Such as: we make sacred promise in this place. Families are sealed together forever in this place, Work for the dead is done in this place, etc. Eventually, they hopefully will guess the temple. Express how important receiving temple ordinances is.
Show your family the 1st printable the path to the temple. Tell them that as a family you are going to discuss the steps and the things we can do now to be worthy to attend the temple. Show your family the footsteps and have a family member choose one. Put the foot step on the path and talk about that footstep and how it can prepare you for the temple. Continue until all footsteps are on the straight path. Explain that if we consistently do these things we will be ready and worthy to go the temple when the time comes.
Show this video: "Families can be together forever"
Explain that every family member has a part to do as member of the family, to have the family be eternal and happy. Have the pieces of the puzzle all cut out. As a family put the puzzle together. When it is put together. Speak about each part of the puzzle and how it can help the family be eternal and happy.
Bear testimonies on living worthy to go the the temple and doing your part to have an eternal family.

Family Home Evening- My Gospel Standards- I will keep my mind and body sacred and pure, and I will not partake of things that are harmful to me.
Family Home Evening Outline for: I will keep my mind and body sacred and pure, and I will not partake of things that are harmful to me.
Welcome everyone to Family Night
Sing: "The Word of Wisdom" pg 154 Children's Songbook
Have a member of the family member say the prayer
Discuss any family business
Scripture: D&C 89 (It may be good to read all verses, read how many will work for your family)
Sing: "The Word of Wisdom" pg 154 Children's Songbook
Have a member of the family member say the prayer
Discuss any family business
Scripture: D&C 89 (It may be good to read all verses, read how many will work for your family)
Lesson: Read: "Run Away!" from the Oct. 2010 friend
Discuss with your family why our bodies are sacred and why we should keep them pure. Ideas might be: Our body is the temple or home of our spirit. It is something that our Heavenly Father has given us. We should be modest when we wear our clothing to show respect to our bodies and our appreciation to our Heavenly Father for our bodies.
Show them this picture for only 5 seconds, then put it away. Ask each family member to close their eyes and describe the picture they had just seen. Discuss as a family that even viewing an image for a short amount of time our minds still remember details of that image.
We should avoid looking at immodest pictures and things, to keep our mind pure. Once we have seen an image it is very difficult to get that image out of our head. The Holy Ghost can not dwell where there are unclean things.
Read: "Cliff Hanger" from the Nov 1992 New Era
Discuss with you family what the guy in the story was blessed with, because he kept the Word of Wisdom. Explain that we should not allow harmful things into our bodies. Discuss some harmful things we should avoid. (see "Word of Wisdom" on Lds.org). What are we promised when we obey the Word of Wisdom?
“All saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
“And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
“And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
“And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them” (D&C 89:18-21).
Have each family member read the Promise card and make the commitment to keep their mind and body sacred and pure, and not partake of things that are harmful to them. Then have each family member sign and date the card. Help younger children do this. Have them keep the card in a spot that will remind them of their decision and promise.
Bear testimonies on keeping our minds and bodies sacred and pure and not partaking of things that are harmful to us.
Close with a Family Prayer.
Treat option:

Family Home evening - My Gospel Standards: I Will Honor My Parents and Do My Part to Strengthen my Family

Welcome everyone to Family Night
Sing: "Families Can Be Together Forever" pg 300 Hymnal

Scripture: Mosiah 13:20 "20 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."

Have a member of the family member say the prayer
Discuss any family business
Scripture: Mosiah 13:20 "20 Honor thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."
Lesson:
Read "The Family: A Proclamation to the World" (you might want to break it up into sections and have each family member that can read, read a part of it) ** After doing this with my young children, my advice would be not to read the whole thing, but to start at "Husband and Wife" and read until the end.

Explain that as a member of a family, you are part of a team. In a team each member has a specific job. If you were a point guard on a basketball team your job would be to control the ball for the offense and get the ball to the right players at the right time. If you were the quarterback on a football team, your job would be to get the football into the en-zone, whether it be by throwing the ball, handing it off to someone else or running with the ball yourself. If you were part of a dance team, your job would be to do the correct dance steps the best you could so the entire dance team looks good together. In a family, each family member needs to do their part, so the family can be strengthened and happy. No matter what team you are a part of if each team member does their specific job the best they can then the team will be successful at their goal.
Give each family member a piece of paper and have them list some things that they can do individually to help strengthen their family and make a happy home. (doing this fulfills one of the "Faith In God" requirements)
Talk about these ideas and have each family member set a goal to do their part so the family can reach their goal of having a happy home.
Some ideas for parents might be:
Preside: This means that Dad and Mom have the responsibility of giving direction to the family.
Preach The Gospel: Dad and Mom also get to teach their children the gospel. Helping each child understand the principles and doctrine and also that they are Heavenly Father's children. Family Home Evenings are a great time to do this. Also, attending church meetings together and then talking about what each individual learned.
Be an Example: Parents can show their children how to keep Heavenly Father's commandments. And also show them how to repent of the mistakes they make themselves.
Provide: Parents have the sacred duty of providing for their children's spiritual and physical needs.
Some ideas for children might be:
Obey: Children can accomplish this by follow the rules the family decides on together.
Honor Parents: Children honor their parents when they show them respect. When they do the things their parents have asked them to do.
Contribute: Help out with household responsibilities.
Here is a great resource to get some ideas of Parents Responsibilities and Children's Responsibilities: "A House of Order" from the Family Home Evening Resource Book. (this is where I got some of the ideas of parent and children responsibilities.)
Bear testimonies on Honoring Parents and Doing our part to Strengthening Family.

Wisdom Wednesday - Chocolate Covered Sugar Cookies
I had a box mix for sugar cookies that had to be used up and the kids were really wanting a treat. So last night I made some sugar cookies. The first batch I rolled in some sprinkles and flattened out into circles. They were pretty good. The next couple of batches I rolled the dough out and cut with some cookie cutters. And baked them. I then warmed some white chocolate chips up in the microwave. Tip: add a little olive oil to white chocolate to make it easier to dip. I then dipped the tops of the cookies into white chocolate and sprinkled with some sugar sprinkles, then put them in the fridge to set up. For the next batch of cookies I warmed up some caramel bits. I just used the directions on the back for dipping caramel apples. I then dipped the top of the cookies into the caramel put them on some wax paper and put them in the fridge to set up. I then warmed up some yummy milk chocolate chips in the microwave. I took the cookies that had been dipped in the caramel and then I dipped them into the milk chocolate. Put them back on the wax paper and into the fridge to set up. They are so yummy!! Enjoy!!
Mommy Monday -FHE lesson- I Will Remember My Baptismal Covenant and Listen to the Holy Ghost

Scripture: Articles of Faith #4 "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost" Try to have everyone memorize it. (Ideas of how to memorize Articles of Faith and other scriptures: Write the words out on a board. Repeat the Article of Faith. Then erase a couple words, continue saying the Article of Faith and erasing words until all of the words are erased and everyone can repeat it. You could also print it out on paper, cut it apart and take a way a couple words. Works the same way as erasing.)
Lesson:
When we are baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we make special covenants with our Heavenly Father.
We promise or covenant with him:
- That we will become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- We will be called his son or daughter.
- We will help others.
- We will testify of Christ and set a good example at all times.
- We will serve God and keep his commandments.
If we keep our baptismal covenants then Heavenly Father promises to:
- Forgive our sins.
- Give us the companionship of the Holy Ghost
- Permit us to enter the Celestial Kingdom to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus.
Use the stick printable. Put the two sticks together and have the word covenant in the middle holding them together. Explain that when we keep our promise then Heavenly Father has to keep his, he is bound by the covenant. But if we break our promise then Heavenly Father does not need to keep his. Because the covenant will be broken. Take away the covenant word strip and show the two sticks broken apart.
Heavenly Father loves us so much that he has given us some special helps. After we are baptized a worthy Melchizedek priesthood holder confirms us a member of the church and gives us the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost will be with us to warn us of dangers, to helps us make the right decisions, and confirm the truthfulness of the gospel to us. Sometimes it is just a feeling we get. We can feel really warm inside, sometimes getting emotional when the spirit is testifying the truth to us. And sometimes we get a very bad feeling when it is something that we should not do. We need to choose to listen to the Holy Ghost.
Heavenly Father has also given us the sacrament to partake of each week. This is when we can renew our baptismal covenants. It is so important to attend sacrament meeting each week. It is the most important part of our meetings, because we renew our covenants with our Heavenly Father. We need to always remember the promises we have made to our Heavenly Father.
Closing thoughts and testimonies.
Closing Prayer
Treat (Covenant pretzel sticks)
Take two pretzel sticks, insert the end of each stick into opposite sides of the marshmallow (Use Big marshmallows, not the small ones). The sticks are like us and Heavenly Father and the marshmallow is like the covenant we make that binds us together. If you want to make them tastier you can dip them in chocolate. While chocolate is still wet you can sprinkle them with sprinkles or cinnamon sugar would be yummy if you dip them in white chocolate.

Mommy Mondays - Kid & Mom Crafts
As I was thinking what things to post on my "Mommy Mondays" I was thinking about what is a mom? In the dictionary it says a mom is: It is says mom is informal for mother. So I looked up mother (on freedictionary.com) and it says: A female person who is pregnant with or gives birth to a child. A woman who adopts a child. A woman who raises a child. A woman who creates, originates, or founds something. Maternal love and tenderness. In "The Family: A Proclamation to the World" it says, "Mothers are primarily responsible for the nurture of their children. In these sacred responsibilities, fathers and mothers are obligated to help one another as equal partners." So what does the word nurture mean? Nurture is defined as: "Care for and encourage the growth or development of." A mom is someone who cares for encourages and helps her child that she is raising to grow and develop. What an amazing responsibility to help another person to grow and develop. To be the best mom or parent we need to look at our kids and decide what kind of a person we want them to be and then exemplify that. Our kids learn from our examples. Our children want our love and encouragement, they want to learn from us. During the summer every ones schedules are changed and kids might need some guidance of things to fill their days with! There are some super fun and creative things to do together. Here are some things that me and my children have enjoyed doing.
Dragon Boats:
Dragon Boats:
My kids loved doing this and still talk about it to this day. I have posted about this before to go to that post click here. I cut out and put the boats together for them using hot glue. Then I let them decorate away. If was fun being creative together! They were also able to use come of their little figures and pretend play with them.
Drawing on a big piece of paper:
This is just one of those pieces of paper that you can get rolls of from the newspaper. You could also use a roll of craft paper. The kids had so much fun. You can tell one of my kids was a scribbler.
Kids love to be active with their hands!! They love to create and then show you their creations. We have a tote that has play dough and all of the tools needed. Cookie cutters work great, plastic knifes or even Popsicle sticks to cut with, rolling pins (They use the scraps from when we just a wood closet rod. They are perfect length and width to use as rolling pins). I also use plastic place mats for them to do all of their creating on, so it's not being done on my table. When play is over, make sure to have them help clean-up.
Here is a play dough recipe:
3 cups of Flour
1 1/2 cups of salt
3 cups of water
3 teaspoons cream of tarter
4 tablespoons oil
Food coloring (you can either add at the beginning or you can knead in at the end)
Mix ingredients together. Heat on low heat until mixture "lumps", then stir into "dough consistency." Store in a "zip-lock" baggie or plastic bag.
More fun kid stuff to come... I think I will be posting different fun things mom's can do with their kiddos on "Mommy Mondays" we all need some ideas to keep our kids busy in the summer!!
