Book Review: "More Mormon Origami" by Todd Huisken

This past March, I did a book review on the book, "Mormon Origami" by Todd Huisken. To check out that book review click here: "Mormon Origami" Book Review

I am excited and pleased to announce that Todd has come out with his second origami book titled, "More Mormon Origami", which like the first is published by Cedar Fort, Inc.  This book is hot off the press and was just released on October 14th. What you can expect from this book, is just as the title suggests, more amazingly fun origami designs that have been inspired by LDS Church history, LDS temples and stories from the Book of Mormon.

Family Home Evening on Getting Ready for the School Year

I always like to do a family home evening focused on the new school year right before school.  It is a time to review the policies and rules of the classroom and school. Set goals and discuss things that might occur during the year.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is: Getting Ready for the School Year. This could also help towards fulfilling Faith in God activity #6 under Developing Talents. Also in the Webelos Cub Scout book there is the Scholar Requirement that could be worked on.

LDS Primary Sharing Time August 2014 Week 2: Family home evening strengthens my family.

August 2014 Sharing Time Topic: Participating in Wholesome Activities Will Strengthen My Family

August 2014 Scripture:  “Successful . . . families are established and maintained on principles of faith, prayer, repen- tance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work, and wholesome recreational activities” (“The Family: A Proclamation to the World”).

Family Home Evening on: Family Fun Activity (Serving Others Category: Faith in God Activity)

One of the funnest activities was when I had my son help plan a "Family Fun Activity". He needed to do this to pass off a requirement in cub scouting.  It was simple, just watching a movie together, but fun because he planned it.  I thought it would be a great idea to have each of my kids take turns in planning something fun that they would like to do as a family.  One of the Faith in God Activities is to "Plan and hold a parent-child activity, such as a dinner, picnic, hike, day trip, or service project". So, I decided to base Family Home Evening around this topic.  For ours my son helped plan a family outing in the mountains to eat lunch, 4-wheel and fish. There is just something about being out in nature that helps build family bonds.  Here is the outline:

I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

Preparation: Research places to go and things to do as a family. Make necessary preparations before leaving for activity.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:  Family Fun Activity (Faith in God Activity: "Plan and hold a parent-child activity, such as a dinner, picnic, hike, day trip, or service project.")

Article of Faith: #7"We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth." (Pearl of Great Price)

Family Home Evening Instruction:

**I would do the planning a day to a week before the family activity.  So you could do the planning the activity for one Family Home Evening and then do the actual Family Fun Activity the next week's Family Home Evening.**

Begin by reading this quote, "Plan and carry out meaningful vacations together, considering our children’s needs, talents, and abilities. Help them create happy memories, improve their talents, and build their feelings of self-worth." - by Robert D. Hales, Strengthening Families: Our Sacred Duty.

Show your family the "Family Fun Planner".  Give them ideas of some activities you could do as a family and invite them to also give some ideas of some activities they think would be fun to do as a family.  Decide on an activity and using the sheet to plan what you will do for the activity and the items you will need.

Read this quote, "Families that play together stay together, especially when their play is uplifting and wholesome. Family vacations, holidays, birthday celebrations, and other activities build strong bonds and feelings of self-worth. The phrase “Remember when we…” is sure to bring love and laughter in the years to come." -Happiness in Family Life

Make the necessary plans. Check the weather if it is an outdoor activity and be prepared.

During the activity look for times to reflect as a family allowing family members to share their thoughts and feelings. **Before leaving for the activity say a pray as a family and upon returning close the activity with a prayer**

Most of all ENJOY each others company, make those memories and family bonds that are so important!

Close with a Family Prayer.

LDS Primary Sharing Time June 2014 Week 4: Family history work connects me to my ancestors.

As with most Sharing Time Ideas, this one can be adapted to a Family Home Evening...

Since June has five Sundays as a presidency we decided to have a Father's Day sharing time the 3rd week which is June 15th. Which means it shifted all of the sharing times down. This is what we have planned for our sharing time schedule for June 2014:  June 1st: Week 1  Priesthood ordinances bless and strengthen my family. June 8th:  Week 2  Temples make it possible for families to be together foreverJune 15th: Father's Day Sharing Time.  June 22nd Week 3:  I can prepare now to be worthy to enter the temple. June 29th Week 4:  Family history work connects me to my ancestors.

June 2014 Sharing Time Topic: Priesthood Ordinances and Temple Work Bless My Family

June 2014 Scripture: “Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven” (Matthew 18:18).

June 2014  Week 4 Topic: Family history work connects me to my ancestors.

Preparation:
Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.

Identify the doctrine:  Prepare and gather props for the primary children to help act out an ancestor's story.

Help the Children Understand the doctrine: Prepare to sing "Family History - I Am Doing It" Found in the Children's Songbook pg 94.

Help them apply the doctrine in their lives: Print out enough Personal history pages for each child.

Free Printables:

Personal History page Black and White

Personal History Page Colored

Sharing Time Instruction:

Begin sharing time by inviting a few children to come up to act out a story from your family history or you could use this story, "The China Doll" BY BARBARA HONEY. Use props to make it fun for the kids as you read the story.  Or even better, invite the Family History Consultant in your ward or branch to have a story that the children could act out and have them come help with this part of the sharing time.

Invite the children to learn the song "Family History - I Am Doing It" Found in the Children's Songbook pg 94.  Use the posters above to help teach the children the song. Sing a line and have them sing the line back to you. Continue with all lines then sing the whole song together.

Ask the primary children what the song says we feel as we take part in Family History work?  Answer: LOVE.  Ask the children what we do when we do Family History work?  We learn stories of our ancestors, we write their history as well as our own, we write our own experiences in journals, we research names, we gather photos, we make sure each one of our ancestors who have passed on ordinance work has been completed, and if not then we prepare it and do it for them.

Invite a primary child to read: “And thus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his fathers. . . . And now when my father saw all these things, he was filled with the Spirit.” (1 Nephi 5:16-17)

Explain that we are filled with the spirit as we do family history work and become more connected to our ancestors.

Give each primary child a handout. Explain that you would like them to fill out the info on the left hand side about themselves including drawing a picture of themselves. Then on the right hand side they will need to go home and find out the info about one of their ancestors. Have them see what the similarities and differences they might have with a particular ancestor.

Close by sharing your testimony on the weeks topic.

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:  Developing Talents (passes off a Faith in God Requirement)

Scripture: Read and Mark: D&C 82:18

Article of Faith: #6: "We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth."

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin family night by giving each family member a certain amount of "Talent Cards". For example: you might give one family member one and another family member 2 and another 5. (Before hand you should have written talents on the cards, I left them blank so if you had specif talents for a certain person you could do that) Have each family member read their cards and think about the talent they have been given.  Then ask each family member if they would be willing to share that talent. If a family member decides to share their talent give them another talent. If they choose not to share that talent, take that talent away and give it to the person with the most talents.

Play the video "The Parable of the Talents".
Explain that Heavenly Father has given each of us talents.  It is our choice to either hide the talents we have been given or to develop and share our talents with others.  If we hide our talents then we will loose them.  If we develop and share our talents then we will gain more talents and will be further blessed.

"We may look on our daily work merely as chores. However, when we perform these tasks in a spirit of loving service to husband, children, family, and friends, we bring joy to ourselves and others. To cook a tasteful meal, study for a class, cultivate a garden, write a letter, kindly encourage a friend or family member—all these efforts are improving talents.

God then grants an increase by blessing us with new talents. Often these are qualities of character. We learn to understand the needs of those we serve and to show patience, affection, tolerance, and generosity." ("Talents Are for Sharing" from the October 1993 Liahona magazine)

Share these ideas for developing talents:

Found in "Idea List: Unearthing Your Talents" from Sept. 1998 New Era Magazine.

• Spend some time each day perfecting a talent or skill you already have.
• Don’t be afraid to try new things.
• Read your patriarchal blessing to see what natural gifts are mentioned there.
• Expose yourself to new activities. If you generally excel in sports, try something in the arts, or vice versa.
• Read about the qualities the Savior possessed, such as charity, selflessness, and forgiveness. Since we all have the ability to eventually become like him, we should work diligently on developing these Christlike attributes.
• Pray that the Lord will help make your weakness into strength as he promised in Ether 12:27.
• Choose someone you admire to be your role model and find out what they did to develop their talents.
• Participate in the New Era contest this year.
• Choose a project in the Young Women, Duty to God Award, or Scouting programs that is different from the projects or values you usually choose. This is a great way to introduce yourself to new activities.
• Look to your roots to see what talents your ancestors had. This could give you clues as to what natural abilities you may have, since some talents are inherited.

• Plan to look semi-ridiculous while trying new things. It’s bound to happen. You may find you don’t have a natural knack for certain activities, but by trying new things, you’ll be gaining courage and the ability to laugh at yourself.

Explain that as a family we are going to learn a new talent together.  Teach each family member how to lead and sing the song, "I am a Child of God" from the Children's Songbook.

Invite each family member to fill out the "I will Develop and Share my Talents" paper (see below printable).

Invite family members to bear their testimonies about how developing talents helps prepare us for service to Heavenly Father and others.

Family Home Evening on The Sacrament Helps Me To Renew My Baptismal Covenants (Faith in God Book Activity)

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:  The Sacrament Helps Me To Renew My Baptismal Covenants (Faith in God Book Activity)

Preparation: Read through and ponder the article, "Understanding the Lord’s Sacrament", BY ELDER DAVID B. HAIGHT, March 1989 Liahona Magazine. Gather pictures; Picture of a chapel Sacrament atonement and the crucifixion.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing"The Sacrament" Children's Song Book Pg 72

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:  The Sacrament Helps Me To Renew My Baptismal Covenants (Faith in God Book Activity)

Scripture: Read and Mark:  3 Nephi 18:7,11

Article of Faith: #5We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Show your family a picture of a chapel (see LINK here).  Ask your family what it is a picture of?  Explain that the chapel is a very special, sacred place.  Ask them why they think it is special and sacred?  Explain that it is special and sacred because a very special and sacred ordinance takes place in the chapel. Explain that each Sunday, we have the opportunity to partake of the sacrament and renew our baptismal covenants.

Play the song, "The Chapel Doors", Children's Song book pg 156. After the song ask your family how we should act in the chapel?  Explain that as soon as we enter the doors that lead into the chapel we should get ready to partake of the sacrament.  The chapel is the place in the church house that we should be the most reverent.  Ask your family what we should do to be reverent and prepare to get ready for the sacrament?  Explain that we are reverent to show our love for our Heavenly Father and our respect for him.  When we are in the chapel, it is time to talk quietly if at all, sit quietly in our chairs with our feet on the ground, walk quietly down the aisles and be thinking about our Savior and all that he has done for us.  In the song it says, "sh_be still", this is how we are to act in the chapel. (In my family we will discuss how it is not a time to be playing electronics or doing other things that do not help us think of the Savior. Instead we can sit quietly, read the sacrament hymn in our minds, read the scriptures, look at a picture of the Savior, think about the Savior atonement, crucifixion and resurrection and think about the things we can do to better choose the right and follow the gospel.). During the sacrament hymn we should be singing and think about the words we are singing. This will also, help us to prepare to partake of the sacrament.

Hold up a picture of the Sacrament. Ask your family what is taking place in the picture?  Ask your family why do we partake of the Sacrament each Sunday? Explain that we as mortals are not perfect people, we make mistakes.  Heavenly Father knew this so he sent Jesus to suffer and atone for our sorrows and sins. And then to suffer death and later be resurrected.  The sacrament helps us remember these sacred events.  It is also an opportunity for us to take part in the atonement. When we are baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we make sacred covenants with our Heavenly Father and we are washed clean of all of our sins. The sacrament allows us to renew the covenants we made at baptism and to be forgiven of the sins and mistakes we have repented of throughout the week.

Read the following quote to explain why it is important to take the sacrament worthily:

"We must take these emblems in worthiness. Personal worthiness to partake of the sacrament is required before one can receive the Holy Ghost. Moroni admonished, “See that ye partake not of the sacrament of Christ unworthily.” (Morm. 9:29.)"

"What is meant by worthiness? Worthiness implies all those matters mentioned in the temple interview questions, but there is more expected from Christ’s disciples than just the refraining from sin. There must also be harmony among Christ’s disciples—especially within families.

Worthiness includes forgiving another, not holding grudges, having no animosity nor hatred in our hearts. To live Christ’s gospel is to have charity for all men. If there are feelings of animosity, members should seek reconciliation before partaking of the sacrament." (Understanding the Lord’s Sacrament, BY ELDER DAVID B. HAIGHT, March 1989 Liahona Magazine.)

Show a picture of the  atonement and the crucifixion. Then play one of the following Sacrament Hymns, invite family members to think about the Savior and how in debt we are to him and grateful we should each be for all that he has done for each one of us.

As Now We Take the Sacrament

Behold the Great Redeemer Die

He Died! The Great Redeemer Died

- I Stand All Amazed

In Memory of the Crucified

While of These Emblems We Partake

(For more options click HERE and look under the title, Sacrament)

Discuss as a family what kinds of things we can each do throughout the week to remain faithful.

Invite family members to bear their testimonies on how taking the sacrament helps your renew their baptismal covenants.

Family Home Evening on Applying the Messages and Directions of the Prophet into our lives

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is: Applying the Messages and Directions of the Prophet into our lives. This past weekend we had the opportunity to listen to the guidance and direction given to us by our Heavenly Father, through our prophet and leaders of our church.  I knew that I wanted to do tonight's Family Home Evening on how we can take the direction given and apply it into our lives.  To act on the words that were said.  This is how we truly follow the prophet. This Family Home Evening will also fulfill one of the requirements in the "Faith in God booklet, Learning and Living the Gospel: Read a recent conference address given by the prophet. Decide what you can do to follow the prophet, and do it."

Preparation:  Before hand prepare to show President Monson's talk from the Sunday, April 6, 2014, Morning Session or President Monson's talk from the Saturday, April 5, 2014 Priesthood Session. Prepare to allow each member to come up with a plan to follow the prophet's direction. In preparation, I would suggest you read this article, "What Is a Living Prophet?" by, PRESIDENT A. THEODORE TUTTLE Of the First Council of the Seventy, July 1973 Ensign Magazine.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet" Hymnal pg 19

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:   Applying the Messages and Directions of the Prophet into our lives

Scripture: Read and Mark: Mosiah 2:41

Article of Faith: # 4- "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin you Family Home Evening by reading this scripture:

"D&C 1:38- What I the Lord have spoken, I have spoken, and I excuse not myself; and though the heavens and the earth pass away, my word shall not pass away, but shall all be fulfilled, whether by mine own voice or by the voice of my servants, it is the same."

Explain that, "A prophet, then, is the authorized representative of the Lord. While the world may not recognize him, the important requirement is that God speaks through him. A prophet is a teacher. He receives revelations from the Lord. " ("What Is a Living Prophet?" by, PRESIDENT A. THEODORE TUTTLE Of the First Council of the Seventy, July 1973 Ensign Magazine.)

Ask each family member to listen to the following direction given by our current prophet, President Monson. Ask them that as they listen, that they will think about how they can follow and apply the direction given, into their life.

Show the video, President Monson's talk from the Sunday, April 6, 2014, Morning Session

or President Monson's talk from the Saturday, April 5, 2014 Priesthood Session.

After the video give each family member a paper, "How I plan to apply the prophet's direction into my life".  Have each family member fill it out, if they need help, help them.  Discuss ways as a family that you can work together to follow the direction of the prophet.

Now, would also be a great time to follow-up, to see if you family member's found the direction and inspiration to the questions they came to conference with seeking answers to.  Share testimonies on the spirit felt during conference and feelings felt as they received their answers.

Bear testimonies on the importance of Applying the Messages and Directions of  the Prophet  into our lives.

Close with a Family Prayer.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:  Heavenly Father gives us Talents to Share with others (Passing off Cub Scout Art Belt Loop) It is really quite amazing if you think about it, all of the gifts our Heavenly Father gives to each of us. The great thing is, is that he doesn't give the same gift or talent to every person.  We each have our individual talents. Why is this so great? Well, I believe it is great becasue we are able to share our talents with each other, to help each other, to teach each other. I am grateful for the gifts I have been given and very grateful for the way other people's gifts/talents have blessed my life.

Introduce this weeks Topic:  Heavenly Father gives us Talents to Share with others (Passing off Cub Scout Art Belt Loop)

Scripture: Read and Mark:  D&C 60:13

Article of Faith: #3 "We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel." Repeat this Article of Faith as a Family. Help each family member to understand the meaning. Help each family member memorize the Article of Faith.

Before FHE, ask each family member to come to FHE with a talent they would like to share.  If member's are having a hard time discovering their talent, help them by pointing out what you think their talents are.

Pretend you are an announcer. Say, "Ladies and Gentlemen, I welcome you to the first (insert your families last name here) family Talent Show.  I would like to introduce our first talented performer, (insert family member's name here)."  Let the family member introduce what their talent is and then let them share their talent with the rest of the family.  Continue with each family member.  Thank each family member for their participation.

Play the video "Matt and Mandy: Developing Talents".

Discuss with your family how great it is that our Heavenly Father has given us each talents or gifts. Discuss ways we can work to develope our talents.  Below are some things we can do to help us develop our talents:

"First, we must discover our talents. We should evaluate ourselves to find our strengths and abilities. Our family and friends can help us do this. We should also ask our Heavenly Father to help us learn about our talents.

Second, we must be willing to spend the time and effort to develop the talent we are seeking.

Third, we must have faith that our Heavenly Father will help us, and we must have faith in ourselves.

Fourth, we must learn the skills necessary for us to develop our talents. We might do this by taking a class, asking a friend to teach us, or reading a book.

Fifth, we must practice using our talent. Every talent takes effort and work to develop. The mastery of a talent must be earned.

Sixth, we must share our talent with others. It is by our using our talents that they grow (see Matthew 25:29)." (Chapter 34: Developing Our Talents. Gospel Principles, (2011), 196–99)

Give each family member the Developing talents printable below. Have them fill it out and work on developing a talent throughout the month.

Explain how there are many different talents.  There are talents that we can see easily, such as talents of playing an instruments, singing, drawing, being good at sports, etc.  There are also talents that are not seen so easily, such as talents of being a good listener, making friends easily, peacemaker, being able to teach, being a good learner/student, having patience, being able to look at the good in people and things, etc.  Each talent is special and can bless others lives when we share it.

Explain to your family that you are going to work on a talent tonight as a family.  The talent is that of art.

Start by showing your family members some art pieces.  Some of these might include some of the drawings in the Media Library on LDS.org. Discuss the elements of design: lines, circles, dots, shapes, colors, patterns, textures, space, balance and perspective.

As a family, "Make a list of common materials used to create visual art compositions." (Cub Scout Art Academics Belt Loop).  The list could include: Water color paint, Colored Pencils, Acrylic Paints, Oil Paints, Chalk, Charcoal, Pencil, Clay, Wood, etc.

Next, "Identify the three primary colors and the three secondary colors that can be made by mixing them. Show how this is done using paints or markers. Use the primary and secondary colors to create a painting."  (Cub Scout Art Academics Belt Loop). See printable below.

Lastly, "Demonstrate how six of the following elements of design are used in a drawing: lines, circles, dots, shapes, colors, patterns, textures, space, balance, or perspective."  (Cub Scout Art Academics Belt Loop). Give each family member a piece of paper and some colored pencils.  Have them draw something using the elements of design, listed above.

Bear your testimony about how Heavenly Father has given us each talents to develop and share with others.

Close with a Family Prayer.
