Preparation:

Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.

Prepare Fish game, pint fish out onto card stock and cut out. Place a paper clip at the mount of each fish. Make a fishing pole with a wooden dowel, attach a piece of jute at the end (tie it and hot glue it to the pole), long enough for the children to hold the pole and catch the fish. At the other end attach a clothes clip with a magnet on it.

Family Home Evening Outline for: I Will Remember my Baptismal Covenant and Listen to the Holy Ghost.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "The Holy Ghost" Children's Songbook pg. 105

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Scripture:  Articles of Faith #4 "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost"  Try to have everyone memorize it. (Ideas of how to memorize Articles of Faith and other scriptures: Write the words out on a board. Repeat the Article of Faith. Then erase a couple words, continue saying the Article of Faith and erasing words until all of the words are erased and everyone can repeat it. You could also print it out on paper, cut it apart and take a way a couple words. Works the same way as erasing.)

Lesson:
When we are baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we make special covenants with our Heavenly Father.

We promise or covenant with him:
- That we will become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
- We will be called his son or daughter.
- We will help others.
- We will testify of Christ and set a good example at all times.
- We will serve God and keep his commandments.

If we keep our baptismal covenants then Heavenly Father promises to:
- Forgive our sins.
- Give us the companionship of the Holy Ghost
- Permit us to enter the Celestial Kingdom to live with Heavenly Father and Jesus.

 Use the stick printable.  Put the two sticks together and have the word covenant in the middle holding them together.  Explain that when we keep our promise then Heavenly Father has to keep his, he is bound by the covenant. But if we break our promise then Heavenly Father does not need to keep his. Because the covenant will be broken. Take away the covenant word strip and show the two sticks broken apart.

Heavenly Father loves us so much that he has given us some special helps.  After we are baptized a worthy Melchizedek priesthood holder confirms us a member of the church and gives us the gift of the Holy Ghost.  The Holy Ghost will be with us to warn us of dangers, to helps us make the right decisions, and confirm the truthfulness of the gospel to us.  Sometimes it is just a feeling we get. We can feel really warm inside, sometimes getting emotional when the spirit is testifying the truth to us. And sometimes we get a very bad feeling when it is something that we should not do.  We need to choose to listen to the Holy Ghost.

Heavenly Father has also given us the sacrament to partake of each week.  This is when we can renew our baptismal covenants.  It is so important to attend sacrament meeting each week.  It is the most important part of our meetings, because we renew our covenants with our Heavenly Father. We need to always remember the promises we have made to our Heavenly Father.

Treat (Covenant pretzel sticks)
Take two pretzel sticks, insert the end of each stick into opposite sides of the marshmallow (Use Big marshmallows, not the small ones).  The sticks are like us and Heavenly Father and the marshmallow is like the covenant we make that binds us together.  If you want to make them tastier you can dip them in chocolate.   While chocolate is still wet you can sprinkle them with sprinkles or cinnamon sugar would be yummy if you dip them in white chocolate.

Last week, we learned about the importance of standing in holy places. Which means we are creating an atmosphere where the spirit can dwell. We also be discussed the importance of listening and following the spirit and being a light to those around us. 

June sharing time week 3 or FHE idea for Renewal of Baptismal Covenant matching game

As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints we partake of the sacrament each week.  When we do this we renew the covenants we make when we are baptized.  In D&C  20:77 it says that we promise to, "...take upon them the name of thy son...always remember him...keep his commandments..." and in return Heavenly Father promises to, "...always have his Spirit to be with them...". In Primary the children are learning about, "When I take the sacrament, I renew my baptismal covenants".  I thought that I would reinforce this at home by letting my kids play a little matching game.  I have made these printouts, that you are welcome to print out on 11 x 8.5 card stock.  I thought that we would play the matching game and when they got a match then we would talk about each thing and who made the promise.  So... 

- "Take Upon Them The Name of Thy Son", we would discuss that we take Jesus' name upon us.  That we are members of his church and that we will act as he would have us act, we will follow his example. This is a promise we make to Heavenly Father.

- "Always Remember Him", we will remember all of the things he has done for us.  That he suffered for all of our sins and hurts. And that he died for us and was resurrected that we all might live again. We don't just think about this on Sundays, but always. This is a promise we make to Heavenly Father.

- "Keep His Commandments", we will keep all of Heavenly Father's commandments and be obedient. This is a promise we make to Heavenly Father.

-  "Always Have His Spirit To Be With Them", means that if we keep all of our promises then Heavenly Father will let the spirit be with us always to help lead us and guide us. That is why there is a clock on this paper with no hand, because it is not just a certain time of the day, but always. This is the promise he makes to us.

I have loved studying the Old Testament so much so far this year! I have really had to dive in and be prepared, because I have started subbing as a seminary teacher. I have probably studied the Old Testament more this week, than I have in my entire life. The discussions we have had as seminary classes have been amazing. The discussions I have had with my family, so far have been amazing as well. I think it is because the Old Testament, testifies of Christ. We can bring Him into our discussions.

Last week, we learned about the Lord giving a revelations to Joseph, Oliver and David, as well as a very important revelation giving to Martin Harris. To be honest, each time I learn more about Martin Harris, I admire him more and more. I love this revelation, it is a beautiful communication to Martin Harris from the Lord.

Since, each organization has their own outlines and each lesson will need to be specified to the individual class members and there are already amazing outlines that can be used for guidance, I am only going to share some general ideas that can just be used as supplements.

Here is the Scripture for the month:

“In the ordinances ... the power of godliness is manifest”  (D&C 84:20).

Lesson Ideas: 

There are so many topics to choose from this month. I am just giving supplemental ideas to a few of them. Please refer to the church's website for the wonderful outlines they have on there for all of the topics, see links below. 

Young Women: 

- Why are ordinances important in my life?  Here is a great link about ordinances and why they are important. This talk, "Do We Know What We Have?"
BY CAROLE M. STEPHENS, could be used both for this topic and the topic about covenants. Invite class members to share the ordinances they have taken part in and their experiences as well as sharing your own.

- Why are covenants important in my life? Here is a great link about Covenants.  I did a FHE post a little while back on covenants, it could easily be adapted to a class lesson. Here is the link to the post, free printable.  

- Why are temple ordinances important?  "Temple Ordinances and Blessings", was in the July 2009 New Era Magazine, quotes could be cut out and read by class members and discussed as a group. 

- What does it mean to take upon myself the name of Jesus Christ?  Whenever I think of this topic the song, "What Have I Done With His Name?" by Kenneth Cope comes to my mind.  The song speaks of the names we are given and the names we choose to take upon ourselves. One of these names being the Savior's name as become members of his church.  The lyrics to the song can be found here on Kenneth Cope's website, part of the chorus can also be listened to from that site.

Aaronic Priesthood:

- How can I help others have a meaningful experience with the sacrament? Here is the direct link to the outline for this topic. 

- What is the oath and covenant of the priesthood?  "The Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood", CARLOS E. ASAY, is a great General Conference talk on the oath and the covenant. 

Sunday School:

- What spiritual truths can I learn from the ordinances of the gospel? Give each class member a words strip that has on it an ordinance and a scripture about that ordinance. Ask them to each take a couple minutes to look the scripture up, read it and ponder it. Then invite each member to explain what spiritual truths they can or have learned from that particular ordinance.

- How can I deepen my understanding of covenants?  Explain that a covenant is a spiritual contact between one's self and Heavenly Father.  It is a two-way promise.  What happens when one of the people break a contract? The contract becomes void.  Invite class member to discuss what they promise Heavenly Father as they make specific covenants such as, baptism, sacrament, priesthood oath and covenant and marriage sealing and covenant.  Then discuss what Heavenly Father promises for each.  Explain that Heavenly Father is bound to keep his promise if we keep ours. But if we break our promise then he is no longer bound to keep his. 

- How can I make the sacrament more meaningful to me? Here is a link to a FHE I did on renewing our covenants during the sacrament. It worked great to emphasize preparing for the sacrament during the week and then what we should be doing during the sacrament.  It is a nice reminder for everyone.

- How can I prepare to receive temple ordinances? Here is a sharing time I did recently that could be adapted to a Sunday School lesson. I remember being a Young Women and having a lesson on preparing for the temple.  We were each given a small paper that had some things we promised to do to prepare for our temple ordinances. We were to sign it and then it was placed into a temple recommend holder. To help remind us of our goal and what we promised to do to get there.

One Idea is that you could have a spiritual night focused on the ordinance path: Baptism and Confirmation, Sacrament,  Priesthood Ordination (for Young men),  Temple Endowment, Marriage Sealing.  Maybe each area in the Cultural Hall or each class room could have a station where there could be a speaker or story/lesson taught on each ordinance.

Another Idea would be TEMPLE Trip. Meeting with the temple President and Matron. Baptisms for the Dead. Or seeing before hand if their is any cleaning or of the temple grounds the youth could do.

April's Visit Teaching Message

I decided that I am going to start posting about the Visit Teaching Messages and maybe some cute ideas to give the sister's.  So, first of all I know that not everyone knows what visit teaching is.  So I will first explain.  I am a member of  The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  I am also a member of the Relief Society(group of women) in my ward.  As a Relief Society member I have been asked to visit and to watch over some women (which we call sisters) in our ward.  Each month we have a topic that we are able to discuss and visit with these women about.  We also help each women with any needs they may have.  Really we get to know each other, become friends and watch out for each other.  If you would like to learn more please click on this link.

So, I am a little late this month.  But thought I would post anyways.  This months message is "Temple Covenants". Click here for the full message.

Our prophet, President Monson has taught: "The saving ordinances received in the temple that permit us to someday return to our Heavenly Father in an eternal family relationship and to be endowed with blessings and power from on high are worth every sacrifice and every effort," He further says, “As we remember the covenants we make within [the temple], we will be more able to bear every trial and to overcome each temptation.”

Our temples are the most sacred buildings. They are where we make covenants with our Father in Heaven.  A covenant is a two way promise.  That means we promise to do something and the Heavenly Father promises also.  In our temple we are able to be sealed together for all eternity to our families. We do work for those who have passed on and have not had the opportunity to do the work themselves.  

I am grateful for my temple marriage and for the knowledge that I can live with my family for all eternity with our Heavenly Father.  I also, know that I have to keep living worthy of those blessings, that I need to keep my promise so my Father in Heaven can keep his.

So, I gave this little handout to my sister that I found at Pink Polka Dot Creations. Usually, I will make my own, but I was short on time and my husband hadn't put my photo editing software back on the computer yet. I thought these were cute though.  I printed them on photo paper and attached a magnet on the back (my trick is to cut up those advertisement magnets you get and paste them on the back) Then I wrote our information on it (names and phone numbers).  Then they can call us whenever needed.

This last week, we learned about God's law, including how we are to treat each other with love and unity and the law of consecration. I loved this last week's study and found some amazing quotes. One of my favorites focus on, that it is more important to focus on what we are doing and how we are treating others, then worrying how we are being treated ourselves.

How to Make Come, Follow Me Work for Families

So how do we make Come, Follow Me, or Home Centered Gospel Learning work for our families? Hopefully, I can help answer that question, or at least give you some inspiration to try it and push on!

The biggest question and most frequent question I have heard is how to keep the attention of the little ones and be able to engage the older ones in more discussion as well. Though I no longer have toddler age kiddos, my children do range from nine to fifteen and I have done Family Home Evening lesson with little kiddos. As well as taught Sharing Times with multiple age groups.
