We have been counseled by church leaders to make family scripture study part of our everyday lives. If you are like our family, we get together each night before bed, read some verses, maybe discuss it a tiny bit. Which is great, but I've been feeling like we can do much better!!

So, I'd like to share a few things that can help us make our family scripture study more meaningful...

First, Make Family Scripture Study a Part of Your Everyday Routine...

I have found for my family right before bed works. It gives us an opportunity to read the scriptures together as a family and to also pray as a family.  Friends of mine, like to do it in the morning before everyone heads off to work and school. Either works great!! Figure out what works best for your family and make it part of your routine.

With my kids, it is non-negotiable. Even if we are getting home a little later, they make sure that we do our scripture study!

Second, Involve Every Family Member....

Don't mind the miss matched outfit and messy hair! That's sometimes how these boys roll around here.
When my kids were just little, not even able to read yet, we would play the scripture videos, or read in the family scriptures. It was such a great way to introduce the scriptures to them in a way they could understand.

As my children have gotten a little older we have read directly from the scriptures. Each child taking turns in reading. I think this is so important that they learn how to read the scriptures at home. A while back when my kiddos were young, I had a friend tell me about how her eight year old had been reading The Book of Mormon and how it had help him progress in his reading abilities.

I seriously, have a firm testimony of this! I too, from the moment my children could begin to read, encouraged them to read during our family scripture study. There are some words they get stuck on and need help with. But I have also seen an increase in their reading proficiency.

It is also important to include everyone in discussion of the scriptures. I am amazed the beautiful insights that the children bring into the discussion.

Third, Read, Study, Ponder and Apply...

We were doing good with the reading, it was the study, ponder and application part I have felt we could do better on! I was so excited when Heidi reached out to me with her Book of Mormon: Study Guide for Families.

Just flipping through the pages I knew that it was just what I had been looking for. A family friendly study guide to the scriptures. I showed it to my children and they got excited about it too, especially when I told them that we would be using it with our family scriptures study.

What I like about it is that it goes through the scriptures and asks questions about the scriptures, giving space to write or draw. I feel like this is such a great way in getting each family member to really think about what was read and then explain what they received out of reading the scripture. Making the scripture study experience way more meaningful!

The study guide is offered as both a paper back bound version as well as a pdf version. You can order the paper back bound version by clicking here and entering the coupon code: DEAWQWZD  Remember to enter the coupon code, so you can get 10% off the purchase price.

We get so much more out of the scriptures when we are mindfully studying and pondering them. I love that we can think about how it directly applies into our own specific lives, that we can receive answers to our questions and a guiding light in our lives.

Lastly, I just wanted to say that I truly believe that studying the scriptures together as a family can bring unity and love into the home. As we study the gospel and apply it's teachings into our lives, we are letting the spirit in, to guide us, to help us, and to strive for our eternal goals.

Best wishes to you and your family!! If you have any other ideas on how to make Family scripture study more meaningful, please share them in the comments!!

  1. I love these ideas! Doing it as a family really does mean involving everyone, and these are great tips. For me, making a habit of personal scripture study when my kids were babies was a bit challenging until I realized, well, I don't forget to EAT every day! I thought why not eat and study at the same time. I started scripture study over breakfast, which I still do to this day. (My first "baby" is now 20 years old.) On my mission, I remember someone saying that the least you could give to any activity would be 1% of your day, right? Well, 1% of your day is 14 minutes. That has stuck in my head ever since. It's really not that much time. And so worth it.
