2017 LDS Sharing Time Ideas for June Week 4: When I dress modestly, I respect my body as a gift from God.

Ideas for June Week 4 LDS Primary Sharing Time,

2017 Sharing Time Outline Theme: Choose the Right

June 2017 Sharing Time Topic: I Choose the Right by Living Gospel Principles

June 2017 Scripture: “I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them” (1 Nephi 3:7).

June 2017 Song: “Nephi’s Courage” (CS, 120–21)

June Week 4 Topic: When I dress modestly, I respect my body as a gift from God.

Preparation:

Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. The most important thing is to love those you teach and to teach them by the Spirit!! Focus on building their testimonies and helping them come unto Christ!

Sharing Time Instruction:

To begin Sharing Time show the primary children a gift box, inside the gift box have a mirror. Explain to the primary children that inside of the box is a very precious gift. It is a precious gift that our Heavenly Father has given us.

Invite a primary child to come up and open the box and look inside. Invite the primary child to explain to the rest of the primary why that gift is. Pass the box around to the rest of the primary children and invite them to look inside.

While they are passing the box around, explain that our bodies are precious gifts given to us from our Heavenly Father. They allow us to become a little bit more like our Father in Heaven. Which is something we greatly wanted before coming to this earth.

Our bodies are the homes to our spirits and together with our spirits make our soul.

They are so precious that the Savior has paid the price of death and resurrection so one day our bodies and spirits will be reunited and made perfect, never to be separated.

With such a precious gift we should show respect to our bodies.

Invite the primary children to read the week's theme poster, "When I dress modestly, I respect my body as a gift from God."

Explain that modesty shows that we respect our body.

Invite the primary children to sing, "The Lord Gave me a Temple"

Explain to the primary children that Heavenly Father has given us some guidelines of how to dress modestly. These guidelines can be found in the For The Strength of Youth Pamphlet and help us show respect to our bodies and love to our Heavenly Father for giving us our bodies.

In a bag or suit case place the following items: Tie & White Button Shirt, Earrings, Picture to the Savior, Hair brush, sports ball (basketball, soccer ball or dance shoes), Picture of the Prophet, Picture of the Temple

On each of the items place the coordinating quotes. See below.

Explain to the primary children that in our suitcase are items that are going to help us make the right choices when it comes to dressing modestly and showing respect for this precious gift our Heavenly Father has given us.

Invite a primary child to come up and pick an item out of the suitcase. Read the tag and discuss it with the primary children. For the Junior primary you can have them make actions with each one. (see examples of actions below)

Continue with each item.

Close by expressing your love for the primary children and the love that our Heavenly Father has for them, as well as your testimony about respecting our bodies.

Tie & White shirt: "Show respect for the Lord and yourself by dressing appropriately for Church meetings and activities. This is especially important when attending sacrament services. Young men should dress with dignity when officiating in the ordinance of the sacrament." (An action for this could be a motion of putting a shirt on both arms and buttoning it up, to show that when we come to church to partake of the sacrament we wear our Sunday best)

Earrings: "Do not disfigure yourself with tattoos or body piercings. Young women, if you desire to have your ears pierced, wear only one pair of earrings." (An action for this could be point to their skin and their ears, showing that we can show respect to our bodies by avoiding tattoos and body piercings)  Bonus: (For me when I teach about this I bring up that when I was a teenager their were no guidelines about earrings and I had my ears each pierced twice. But when the prophet came out with the guideline that specified only having one pair, I took my second ones out and I have never worn them again. It is a matter of obedience. I feel it is important to share this, because it is not a rare situation. There are converts and others with tattoos and piercings, but when they receive the gospel, they put those aside, taking piercings out and not getting any more tattoos. That is what the atonement is for.)

Picture of the Savior: "Your body is sacred. Respect it and do not defile it in any way. Through your dress and appearance, you can show that you know how precious your body is. You can show that you are a disciple of Jesus Christ and that you love Him." (An action could be making a heart shape with their hands to show that when we dress modestly we are showing love for the Savior)

Hair Brush: "Young men and young women should be neat and clean and avoid being extreme or inappropriately casual in clothing, hairstyle, and behavior." (An action for this could be pretending to come or brush hair, to show that we can show respect for our bodies by taking care of them and being neat and clean)

Sports ball or dance shoes: "Never lower your standards of dress. Do not use a special occasion as an excuse to be immodest. When you dress immodestly, you send a message that is contrary to your identity as a son or daughter of God. You also send the message that you are using your body to get attention and approval...They should choose appropriately modest apparel when participating in sports. The fashions of the world will change, but the Lord’s standards will not change." (An action for this could be that the kids could stand and either pretend to dribble a ball or turn around like a dancer, showing that in every circumstance we can try our best in choosing appropriate modest apparel)

Picture of the Prophet: "Prophets of God have continually counseled His children to dress modestly. When you are well groomed and modestly dressed, you invite the companionship of the Spirit and you can be a good influence on others. Your dress and grooming influence the way you and others act...If you are not sure what is appropriate to wear, study the words of the prophets, pray for guidance, and ask your parents or leaders for help." (An action for this might be to fold arms and bow head,  to show that we can always pray to Heavenly Father if we have questions about if something is modest)

Picture of the Temple: "Your dress and appearance now will help you prepare for the time when you will go to the temple to make sacred covenants with God. Ask yourself, “Would I feel comfortable with my appearance if I were in the Lord’s presence?”" (An action for this could be making a temple steeple with your hands, the steeple is your pointer fingers together, showing that dressing modestly will help them prepare for making sacred covenants in Heavenly Father's temples)

    1. The only time I've had people have issues, is either when they are trying it from a phone, or when there are a lot of people trying to download it at once. The best is to do it from a PC. If you are having problems printing, try downloading and printing from the computer. Let me know if you have any other problems. Thanks!

  6. I have lurked on here many a week, but I'll be moving soon and thus (perhaps) changing callings, so it's time to come out of the shadows. I do a Google search each week I need to prepare a sharing time lesson and inevitably end up back here on your site. The way you teach resonates with me; it's not too flashy, but it's engaging. You make it easy to facilitate deeper discussions with senior primary. I teach middle school, and your lessons are the ones that I like the most. Thank you SO much for sharing all of these resources for free!
