LDS Come Follow Me Lesson & Mutual Ideas, June 2014: Priesthood and Priesthood Keys

For June 2015 ideas click here: Come Follow Me: Priesthood and Priesthood Keys

For June 2014 the topic for "Come Follow Me" is,

"Priesthood and Priesthood Keys"

Here are the links to each organizations page for the month: Young Women, Aaronic Priesthood, Sunday School

Since, each organization has their own outlines and each lesson will need to be specified to the individual class members and there are already amazing outlines that can be used for guidance, I am only going to share some general ideas.

Here is the Scripture for the month:

“The keys of the kingdom of God are committed unto man on the earth” (D&C 65:2).

Lesson Ideas:
This is a great topic and each organization has a little bit different weekly topics. It is a topic that I think everyone needs to learn and understand correctly.  I think each class would benefit in reading or listening to the General Conference address given by Elder Dallin H. Oaks of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, at this past April 2014 Priesthood Session of General Conference. The talk is titled, "The Keys and Authority of the Priesthood".  He gives the best explanation of the priesthood that I have ever heard.

The below topics and outlines for each topic can be found on lds.org. Click on the links below to be directed to the webpage.  Here are some additional ideas I wanted to share that could be used for each topic. (These ideas are meant to supplement those ideas that are already provide by the leaders of the church and given in the outlines for each topic)

- What is the Priesthood?: Give each member of the class a copy of Elder Dallin H. Oaks, General Conference talk, "The Keys and Authority of the Priesthood".  Take turns reading it together in class. Discuss what the priesthood is.

- What are my responsibilities in the work of the priesthood?: You could share these two quotes of what some of the prophets of the church have said about the Relief Society Organization, "President Joseph F. Smith, the sixth President of the Church, said, “This organization is divinely made, divinely authorized, divinely instituted, divinely ordained of God to minister for the salvation of the souls of women and of men.” To a group of Relief Society sisters, President Lorenzo Snow, the fifth President of the Church, said: “You have ever been found at the side of the Priesthood, ready to strengthen their hands and to do your part in helping to advance the interests of the kingdom of God; and as you have shared in these labors, so you will most certainly share in the triumph of the work and in the exaltation and glory which the Lord will give to His faithful children.” - Daughters in My Kingdom, Chapter 1.

- What are the keys of the priesthood?  Share this quote: "Priesthood Keys:
The exercise of priesthood authority in the Church is governed by those who hold priesthood keys (see D&C 65:2; 124:123). Those who hold priesthood keys have the right to preside over and direct the Church within a jurisdiction. For example, a bishop holds priesthood keys that enable him to preside in his ward. Therefore, when a child in that ward is prepared to be baptized, the person baptizing the child must receive authorization from the bishop.

"Jesus Christ holds all the keys of the priesthood. He has given His Apostles the keys that are necessary for governing His Church. Only the senior Apostle, the President of the Church, may use (or authorize another person to use) these keys for governing the entire Church (see D&C 43:1–4; 81:2; 132:7).

"The President of the Church delegates priesthood keys to other priesthood leaders so they can preside in their areas of responsibility. Priesthood keys are bestowed on presidents of temples, missions, stakes, and districts; bishops; branch presidents; and quorum presidents. A person who serves in one of these positions holds the keys only until he is released. Counselors do not receive keys, but they do receive authority and responsibility by calling and assignment." -Priesthood, True to the Faith, (2004), 124–28

An idea might be to cut out a bunch of keys.  Explain that Jesus Christ holds all of the keys. (Show all of the keys)  He gives the Prophet the "keys necessary for governing His Church". We do not have all of the priesthood keys on the earth. (show that the prophet would have some of the keys, which is all of the keys needed to govern the church) The prophet then "delegates priesthood keys to other priesthood leaders so they can preside in their areas of responsibility"  (you could show that a Stake President would hold specific keys to his calling, as a bishop would hold specific keys for his calling)

- How do I receive the power and the blessings of the priesthood in my life? Us the sun printable below and have the young women right a blessing that they have received by having the priesthood in their life. Play the video, "Blessing of the Priesthood"

- What does it mean to sustain my church leaders? I love what it says on the outline and I think it would be great to share it with the class: "As members of the Church, we have the opportunity to sustain those the Lord has called to serve. We raise our hand to indicate that we sustain the General Authorities and officers of the Church and each of the leaders in our wards and stakes—including Young Women class presidencies. Sustaining leaders involves more than just a raised hand—it means that we stand behind them, pray for them, accept assignments and callings from them, obey their counsel, and refrain from criticizing them."  Explain that when we sustain leaders we are saying that we will give them support in their calling.  Cut out a paper doll chain (the ones that are connected by their feet and hands to each other) Pass the linked paper doll people around and ask each member of the class to right one way they could support one of the church leaders in their calling.  (ideas: attend Sunday meetings and weekly activities, agree to help out with something if asked, Pray for them in their callings, participate in the lessons and activities, show appreciation, etc) Explain that we are all building the kingdom of God together, the way we do this is by helping each other and giving support to each other's callings.

- How does worthiness affect priesthood power? (Duty to God)  I really liked this quote at the top by the topic, "Priesthood authority comes through ordination, but priesthood power requires personal righteousness, faithfulness, obedience, and diligence. Even if we receive priesthood authority by the laying on of hands, we will have no priesthood power if we are disobedient, unworthy, or unwilling to serve."  I  think it is important for the young men to understand the difference between being ordained with priesthood authority and being able to use the priesthood power.

- What is the priesthood? Give each member of the class a copy of Elder Dallin H. Oaks, General Conference talk, "The Keys and Authority of the Priesthood".  Take turns reading it together in class. Discuss what the priesthood is.

- What are the keys of the priesthood? See ideas for topic above under Young Women

- What are my duties as an Aaronic Priesthood holder? Provide each young man with a piece of paper. Ask them to list the duties they have as an Aaronic Priesthood holder.  Take turns reading, "Fulfilling My Duty to God (2010), 23, 46–47, 70–71"  You could also show the video, " Fulfilling your Duty to God" or "Faith in the Priesthood".

- Why should I serve a mission? This would be a great time to invite four people as guest teachers to your room.  One could be a young man who has been preparing and has received his mission call or is close to receiving his call. Another could be a current missionary. Another could be a newly returned missionary and the last could be a person who has been back from his mission for a while (Is married and has kids, maybe even grand-kids)  The one preparing to leave can talk about why he decided to serve a mission.  The current missionary can discuss the knowledge and growth he has and is currently receiving from serving a full-time mission.  The newly return missionary could discuss the experience of serving a mission.  The return missionary the has been home for a while could discuss how serving a mission has helped prepare him for the rest of his life. How is has prepared him to be a righteous husband, father, etc.  Discuss with the young men how it is our responsibility as members of the church to invite everyone to come unto Christ and to learn of his teachings. We do this by serving full-time missions and by being member missionaries.

- What does it mean to sustain my church leaders? See ideas for topic above under Young Women.

- How can I participate effectively in councils of the church? Show the video,  “Participate in Councils,” Leadership Training Library.  Invite two ward council members to come and bear their testimonies and share their experiences in regards to ward council. Also invite one of the members of the bishopric to share some ideas of how the youth can participate in councils of the church.

- How do women and priesthood holders work together to build the kingdom of God? An analogy about a team of draft horses could be used in comparison to this topic.  It could be explained that when two horses work together as a team, they can pull a lot more weight than if they were doing it themselves.  It could further be explained that each horse has a specific task as it is pulling the load. When the two horses are yoked together and they each do their specific job then they are able to pull the maximum weight.  The same is true when it comes to women and priesthood holders working together to build the kingdom of God.  Women and priesthood holders each have divinely given gifts and responsibilities. As they yoke together in their work having the common purpose of building the kingdom of God, each of using their gifts to fulfill their tasks or responsibilities then they will be able to accomplish that which Heavenly Father requires of them. The responsibilities and gifts that women and priesthood holders can then be explained.  A good idea would be to read, The Family: A Proclamation to The World.

- Why is it important to follow the counsel given by priesthood leaders?  Have the youth picture a narrow pathway, explain that on one side of the path is rapid flowing waters and on the other side of the path is thorny bushes.  Explain that it is dark and they can not see the pathway very well if at all.  But they have someone with them that is leading them along the pathway.  Explain that this person receives instruction and guidance through the Holy Ghost of how to keep them safely on the path and out of the rapid waters and thorny bushes.  He then gives counsel and guidance to them, if they listen carefully and follow the counsel then they will be safe on the the path. But if they choose not to listen and follow the instruction then they will be swept into the rapid waters of sorrow and/or stuck in the thorny bushes of pain.  It can then be explained that Heavenly Father has priesthood leaders ordained and given keys to govern the church and to give counsel and guidance to keep members of the church safe from the sorrow, pain, disappointment and troubles that are lurking in this mortal life. It is important to follow the counsel they give, because it will keep us on that safe path.

- How can using scripture study skills help me learn more about the priesthood?
Welcome everyone to class and explain that they each are going to be given a test.  Ask them what they usually do to prepare to take a test?  Answers might include that they have to study the materials that they are going to be tested on. They might read and study a text book or notes that they took during class.  Explain that this life is their test. Explain that Heavenly Father knew that the test would be a difficult one, so he gave us material to study to help us be successful with our test.  The material he gave us is the instructions found in the scriptures.  Each day we are to STUDY and PONDER the scriptures.  Ask the class how they study and ponder the scriptures. Then discuss the different resources and ways there are to help them develop good study skills and receive the instruction that Heavenly Father has for them.  Explain that we read the scriptures to receive direction and guidance.

- How can I use stories to teach others about the priesthood? Begin by sharing a story of how the priesthood has blessed your life.  Explain that as we tell our own stories as well as stories found in the scriptures or given by latter-day prophets, we are able to better teach others about the priesthood.  Have class members think about their favorite children's story. Explain that they probably remember it even though years have passed. Allow class member's to share their stories about the priesthood  or share a favorite scripture story or story given by a prophet.

Idea's for Mutual:
Here is a link to the Youth Activities Planning Site.

Write letters of appreciation to leaders.  Have stationary, pens and markers available for the youth to right letters to as many leaders at they would like to show appreciation to.  They could also frost cookies and deliver the cookies along with the appreciation letters.

Fireside about priesthood blessings.  Stories and testimonies could be shared about how the priesthood has blessed their lives.  Invite the ward council to come and discuss how the priesthood helps them fulfill their responsibility in each of their callings.

Come, Follow Me 2021 Doctrine and Covenants 12 and 13; JSH 1:66-75

Last week we were introduced to the Prophet Joseph Smith's, brother Hyrum. What I loved about the revelation given to Hyrum, is that the Lord knowing Hyrum's eagerness to participate in the Lord's work, asked of him to do something that is often hard. He asked him to be patient and while being patient to prepare. I loved this, because it has been my experience that many times throughout our lives we too will need to be patient and during that time prepare. The Lord has a great work for each of us to do. Preparation helps us to be better instruments in the Lord's work.

Spiritual Journal: Entry #1: The Blessings of God Are Given to Women, Even The Priesthood!

I wanted to start something new, where I post some of the spiritual thought or experiences that happen in my life.  They will be posted as part of my Spiritual Journal. This will allow me to be able to recognize the spirit in experiences in my life and be able to share it with others.  We are strengthened as we share our testimonies and as we listen to the testimonies of others.

Spiritual Journal Entry Number 1: (This is a little bit of a long read-bear with me)

This past weekend, I had the opportunity as a daughter of God and as women in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to be able to watch the General Women's Conference.  I came away from the meeting feeling empowered, inspired and incredibly grateful and humbled.

I am a daughter of God, I do know that he loves me personally and that the love that he has for me is unconditional.  There is nothing that I can do to change his love for me.  I picture him up their in heaven cheering me on as I overcome each trial and obstacle in this life.  Life in general can be difficult, it was designed this way to refine us, to help us form a closer relationship with our Father in Heaven.  I know that it is at the times in my life that I feel so extremely overwhelmed and I know that I can not do it on my own, that I stop and turn to my Heavenly Father and draw closer to him.  I know that he will listen and sympathize with me, I know that he will give me the needed strength and that additional boost to endure my trials. I have a strong testimony of this, because I have experienced the peace and the power that comes from fervent prayer to him over a trial. The comfort and love the radiates from such an experience.

President Eyring said at this conference, "He sees not only what you are, but what you are to become." He, being our Heavenly Father.  I think back to when I was a child. My parents have always been very encouraging and supportive of me.  There expectations were always made known to me. They taught me the importance of the gospel in my life. This helped me as I set goals of the person I desired to be and the person I knew my parents and Heavenly Father wanted me to be.  I frequently tell my children, that I tried to choose the right, because I did not want to disappoint my parents.  It is the same way with my Heavenly Father. He knows my potential and just thinking about what he sees that I can become gives me the encouragement that I need. But yet, I know that he will still love me as I make mistakes. Sister Burton, spoke about becoming complete or perfect.  It does not mean that we have to have a perfectly organized home, never make a mistake, or have children that listen and obey our every word. What it does mean is that as we try our best to keep the commandments, each time we seek repentance for our imperfections and use the atonement of Christ we are becoming more complete and perfect. That is what this journey of life is all about. We learn, we grow, we experience trials, we use the atonement, we grow closer to our Savior and our Heavenly Father, as we do these things we become more perfected.  As women we can help our brother's and sister's, also become perfected through, Christ.

As daughters of God, we are also sisters. Each female that has and will come to this earth is a spiritual sister, bound together as individual daughter's of God.  As I sat in the stake center I became even more aware of the unity and strength that comes from sisterhood.  It is so neat to think that part of this sisterhood is to help each other throughout our live's journeys. I was particularly touched as the primary aged girls were asked to stand and sing the first verse of, "Teach Me To Walk".  I thought of them just beginning their path, some of them just making the covenants of baptism. They are so innocent and pure.  As the rest of the women were ask to sing the second verse, I could hardly sing the words.  I was touched by the spirit, as I thought about my role in teaching my own children and the children of the church, by learning together and following the example of our Savior.

As sister's we should celebrate the differences that we each have, no two people are the same.  Which is wonderful! Could you imagine if all of us were exactly a like, how incredible boring that would be.  We each have our strengths and talent as well as our own weaknesses.  I agree with Sister Oscarson, when she spoke about how the adversary wants us to be judgmental of each other and of ourselves. I have experienced this first hand.  I remember when I first moved into our ward, I saw all of the amazing women who had so many talents and were so good at so many things. Regretfully, I let this make me feel inadequate.  I even thought, how are they ever going to need me, with so many talented people.  That is how the adversary wants us to think, he wants us to do the comparisons, but really that is not fair to ourselves or others.  Now, I look at these women in my ward and still see them as extremely talented, admirable women, but it doesn't make me feel inadequate anymore.  Instead, I think of how we can each use our strengths to strengthen and teach each other. And guess what, the ward did need me, they need each one of us.  Each of us have been given our own specific talents and those talents are needed to fulfill the callings in our ward, community and families.  We work together with a common goal and purpose of helping each other and those around us to come unto Christ.

When we lived with our Father in Heaven, we were divinely created as his sons and daughters, male and female.  As his daughters we were given the qualities to nurture others. As President Eyring said, that is our "...Divine Heritage..."  We have the responsibility to treat each person that we come in contact with as a child of God.  He loves them and he desires we love them, as ourselves.  Before attending the meeting, I had made a visit to a local grocery store. As I was pulling into the crazy parking lot (Note to self, don't go grocery shopping on Saturdays!), there were cars stopped letting people out and they were not being quick about it.  I became frustrated with their lack of consideration and even said some unkind things about them.  Right then, I had a thought that came to my mind that, they are children of our Heavenly Father. That I should not be thinking or saying unkind things about them. I instead should love them and seek for ways to show that love and kindness towards them.  Those thoughts were reinforced as I attended the General Women's Conference. Every person on this earth is a beloved son or daughter of God.  Each of us can be full recipients of the blessings our Heavenly Father has in-store for us.  The end goal is the same for each of us, to inherit the Celestial Kingdom and have eternal life with our eternal families.

I am amazed at all of the blessings that I receive as a daughter of God.  One of those blessings is the role of the priesthood in my life.  On lds.org Topic:Priesthood, it states, "The word priesthood has two meanings. First, priesthood is the power and authority of God. It has always existed and will continue to exist without end (see Alma 13:7–8; D&C 84:17–18). Through the priesthood, God created and governs the heavens and the earth. Through this power, He exalts His obedient children, bringing to pass “the immortality and eternal life of man” (Moses 1:39; see also D&C 84:35–38)."

As a daughter of God I am entitled to the blessing of the priesthood. "Elder M. Russell Ballard taught: “In our Heavenly Father’s great priesthood-endowed plan, men have the unique responsibility to administer the priesthood, but they are not the priesthood. Men and women have different but equally valued roles. Just as a woman cannot conceive a child without a man, so a man cannot fully exercise the power of the priesthood to establish an eternal family without a woman. In other words, in the eternal perspective, both the procreative power and the priesthood power are shared by husband and wife” (“This Is My Work and My Glory,” Apr. 2013 general conference)-resource:Women Participate in the Work of the Priesthood".

As I reflect on my life I see all of the many ways the priesthood has blessed it. I have experienced the blessings of the priesthood in things such as:  The beautiful earth that we live on was created by priesthood power.  The sealing and binding powers of the priesthood, as I was born in the covenant to parents who were sealed by priesthood authority and as I made covenants myself to my husband and was sealed to him for all eternity. I have received blessings through men who have been ordained to administer the priesthood, these blessings include: baby blessing, father's blessings,  patriarchal blessing, and blessings administered to me by my husband.  When I turned eight, I made my first covenant as I was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by the power and authority of the priesthood. I then was confirmed a member of the church, by the laying on of hands by the authority of the Melchizedek priesthood, and received the Holy Ghost. This blessing of the priesthood is one the I cherish.  I am able to have the Holy Ghost as my constant companion.  When my husband and I were sealed together in the holy temple, my husband and I became partners, I have every right to call upon him to use the priesthood authority he has been ordained with to bless our children, myself and our home. One of the great blessings is that, when our children were born they were automatically sealed to us for all eternity.

I have been called to callings throughout my life by those who hold the priesthood keys, they have set me apart in my callings, by the priesthood authority they have been ordained with.  Through the direction of the priesthood, I carry out and fulfill my calling.  I have felt the guidance of the spirit and the direction from having been set apart.  When I sit in sacrament meeting and partake of the sacrament, I am renewing my covenants and taking part in another blessing of the priesthood.  There are so many ways that the priesthood power is in-force in my life, so many that I don't even think I have thought about or acknowledged.

As a women in the church, I recognize my divinity. I am a women who is a part of an amazing organization, an organization of sisterhood.  We serve and instruct each other. We are a large circle of friends, who have a love for each other and a concern for each other's well being. As women we are more aware of the needs of those around us, through the promptings of the spirit we will be led to those who need to be nurtured. I am grateful for the qualities I have been given as one of God's daughters. I am grateful for the distinct roles and qualities men and women each have.  We are partners, we are to use are qualities and roles, to become more complete. I think if we could only see, everything our Heavenly Father sees and knows, we could all realize the importance of the order and roles we each play in his grand plan.  I love each one of my sister's, the one's I serve with in my ward, community and family and the sister's I do not know, that might live in a different country, or that I might pass in a grocery store. I am grateful that we are able to serve along side each other leaning upon each other's strengths to accomplish great things!!

Priesthood Ordinance Printable

Sharing Time Instruction:

Begin sharing time by inviting the primary children to sing the second verse of,  "Love is Spoken Here", with you. Put the two posters with the 2nd verse words on the board.  After the song invite one child to come up and put a circle around the words that say what thing blesses our families. (They should put a circle around priesthood pow'r).  Explain that the song says that our homes are blessed by the strength of priesthood power.  Hold up the poster that says, "Priesthood ordinances bless and strengthen my family." Invite the children to repeat the wording with you.

Play a Guessing Game with the children:

Place the following pictures on the board with a piece of paper over them with a number on it. See Number Printables above.

Explain to the primary children that each of the pictures is a picture of a priesthood ordinance that blesses families. Explain that you are going to give them a few clues to each picture and you would like them to guess what the ordinance is and explain how that ordinance can or has strengthened their family.  For each picture give the primary children the clues, ask them to raise their hands to guess what ordinance it is.  When they have guess the ordinance take the cover paper off and show the picture of the ordinance.  Ask the children to tell you how that ordinance can or has strengthened their family. Then go onto the next ordinance.

1. Baptism:
       -  This ordinance happen's after a person turns 8 years old.
       -  This ordinance is performed by someone who holds the Aaronic Priesthood.

How Baptism blesses and strengthens families:  When we are baptized we become members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, we make special covenants with our Heavenly Father. One of the promises we make is to keep his commandments. When we follow Heavenly Father's commandments we can strengthen and bless our family.

2. Confirmation:
       -  A person receives the Holy Ghost as a constant companion by this ordinance.
       -  This ordinance is performed by someone who holds the Melchizedek Priesthood.

How Confirmation blesses and strengthens families: When we are confirmed we receive a special gift. We receive the Holy Ghost to be with us as long as we are doing what's right. We want the spirit to dwell in our home. Our family will be strengthened and we will become closer to our Heavenly Father.

3. Sacrament:
       -  This ordinance takes place each Sunday in the chapel.
       -  We take part in this ordinance to renew our baptismal covenants.

How the Sacrament blesses and strengthens families:  When we partake of the sacrament we are renewing our baptismal covenants.  We are able to repent and be fully forgiven of our imperfections and sins.  When we are trying to do what is right and renewing our covenants our family will be blessed.

4. Temple Marriage Sealing:
        -  This ordinance takes place inside of a temple.
        -  This ordinance binds families together for eternity.

How the Temple Marriage Sealing ordinance blesses and strengthens families:  When families are sealed together by priesthood power and authority in the temple our families are bound on earth as well as in heaven.  We become an eternal family.  What an amazing blessing, to know that you will be with the ones you love forever.

Thank each child for their participation.

Give each child a copy of the "Priesthood Ordinance" Printable and ask them to take their papers home and discuss with their families how their family is blessed and strengthened because of each priesthood ordinance. (If time allows you could have them color them)

Close by sharing your testimony on the weeks topic.
