Family Home Evening based around President Dieter F. Uchtdorf's message: A Firmly Set Anchor (April 2014 Ensign)

I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:  President Dieter F. Uchtdorf's message: A Firmly Set Anchor (April 2014 Ensign)

Preparation: Before Family Home Evening Read through the Message in the April 2014 Ensign,
"A Firmly Set Anchor" by President Dieter F. Uchtdorf.

Welcome everyone to Family Night

Sing: "The Wise Man and the Foolish Man" Children's Song Book Pg 281 or "O Thou Rock of Our Salvation" Hymnal pg 258

Have a member of the family member say the prayer

Discuss any family business

Follow-up with last weeks FHE.

Introduce this weeks Topic:  A Firmly Set Anchor

Scripture: Read and Mark: Helaman 5:12

Article of Faith: # 4- "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

Family Home Evening Instruction:
To begin Family Home Evening Instruction give each family member the printable with the boat on it.  Allow them to color the boat if they would like.  Explain that you will be using this paper throughout the lesson. Begin reading the message from President Uchtdorf, as a family. Read the first card. Ask family members to listen carefully as the rest of the message is read and to think about how this parable might relate to them each personally.

Then read the second card ("Why We Need Anchors"). Discuss what kind of storms the adversary might throw at us to blow us off of our coarse.  Discussion might include: Breaking the commandments. Reading or Watching things that chase the spirit away, etc.   Some soft winds that might blow us into danger could be things that distract us from what is important. Forgetting to say our prayers, not making reading the scriptures and Family Home Evening a priority.

Have a family member read the third card ("The Gospel Is Our Anchor"). After reading this card have everyone write next to the anchor on their paper the word, GOSPEL. Discuss, what President Uchtdorf says about "the gospel of Jesus Christ" being an anchor. Next, discuss some ways they can "firmly set (their) anchors on the bedrock of gospel truth".  Have family member's write the ways on the rocks at the bottom of the page.  Some ideas could be: Reading scriptures daily, gaining a testimony of the Savior, sharing their testimonies,  Praying to Heavenly Father always, Attending church each Sunday and keep the Sabbath day holy, Family Home Evening every week, Listening to the prophets and applying their message into our lives, etc.

Have a family member read "The Value of Firmly Set Anchors". Discuss that as each family member lives a Christ centered life and has that firm testimony of the Savior, that it will be much easier to resist temptations when they present themselves. It will be easier to stand up against temptation and be immovable.

Bear testimonies on the importance of being firm in our testimonies of the Gospel.

Close with a Family Prayer.
