October 2016 Song:  Your Choice

October Week 2 Topic: The scriptures teach me how and when to pray.

Preparation:

Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine. Remember to teach by the Spirit and teach the doctrine.

Sharing Time Instruction:

Begin Primary by showing the primary kids, a set of scriptures. Show the primary children the Week's Theme poster and invite them to repeat it with you, "The Scriptures teach me how and when to pray." Explain to the primary children that the scriptures are given to us by Heavenly Father to teach us and instruct us of the gospel and the gospel principles.

Before primary place a bookmark into five Book of Mormons (you can use the Book of Mormons found in the wards library) If your ward's library does not have that many Book of Mormons you can either ask teachers if you can us theirs, or you can just use the printables. Hide the scriptures around the room, where the will be easy to find.

Explain to the primary children that Heavenly Father loves us so much that he wants us to communicate with Him through prayer. The scriptures instruct us how and when to pray to our Heavenly Father. Place the two word strips, "How" and "When" on the board. Explain that throughout the room are hidden 5 scriptures that will help teach us about prayer. Further explain that they will choose a song out of the bag that is about prayer, the primary will sing the song and you will choose one of the best singers to come up and find one of the scriptures.

After one of the scriptures is found, invite the primary child to read it if they can read, if they can not or do not feel comfortable reading, you can read it for them.  Encourage the children to listen to the scriptures and pick out what the scripture is teaching us about prayer. Write on the board under the posters what the scriptures teach about How and When to pray. Discuss each with the primary.

Continue singing the songs and finding the scriptures until all are found and discussed.

Close by sharing your testimony about the scriptures teaching us to pray and invite them primary children to focus on praying to their Heavenly Father throughout the week.
