Family Home Evening on Going To The Rescue

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

Going To The Rescue {Based on the April 2016 General Conference Talk, "To the Rescue: We Can Do It"

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Invite a member of the family member say the prayer

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Before Family Home Evening print out and hide the sheep from the printable. Begin Family Home Evening by explaining to your family that they need to pretend like they are a shepherd, whose sheep have been scattered and lost. They need to find each one of the sheep. Have your family members find the hidden sheep.

When all sheep have been found, show the following picture of the Savior: The Lost Lamb  Read the following quote from the April 2016 General Conference talk, "To the Rescue: We Can Do It" by Mervyn B. Arnold:

"The Savior clearly understood His mission to rescue our Heavenly Father’s children, for He declared:

“The Son of man is come to save that which was lost. …

“[For] it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.” (Matthew 18:11, 14; emphasis added.)

Explain that the Savior has showed us by example that each one of our Heavenly Father's children are precious to him. Invite your family members to take turns reading the words on each of the sheep. Discuss ways you could reach out individually or as a family to those people.

Give each family member the boat printable. Explain that as a family you are going to discuss some principles of Rescuing those lost sheep, or in other wards, Heavenly Father's children. On the printable are things that could help our friends, neighbors, and family members return to our Savior.

Invite your family members to color in the boat while you tell the story from Elder Arnold's talk about the boat that was caught in a storm at sea. (see link to talk above). Explain that the First Principle is: "We Must Not Delay Going to the Rescue". Discuss as a family why it is important to not wait when we are prompted to do something, such as share the gospel. Invite them to think of someone they know who is calling out for help. Explain that we don't have to have the perfect plan before we invite someone to come to know Christ, we can follow the direction of the Spirit and do what he prompts us to do.

Watch the following video,

 "Reach Out with Love"

Invite your family to color in the lighthouse. Discuss with your family the Second Principle, "We Must Never Give Up".  Read the following quote,

"Like many of you, I have shared the gospel with some who are soon baptized or activated, and others—such as my nonmember friend Tim and his less-active wife, Charlene—take much more time.

For over 25 years I engaged Tim in gospel conversations and took Tim and Charlene to temple open houses. Others joined the rescue; however, Tim declined each invitation made to meet with the missionaries.

One weekend I was assigned to preside at a stake conference. I had asked the stake president to fast and pray about whom we should visit. I was shocked when he handed me the name of my friend Tim. When Tim’s bishop, the stake president, and I knocked on the door, Tim opened it, looked at me, looked at the bishop, and then said, “Bishop, I thought you told me you were going to bring somebody special!”

Then Tim laughed and said, “Come on in, Merv.” A miracle occurred that day. Tim has now been baptized, and he and Charlene have been sealed in the temple. We must never give up."

Explain that we never know when someone is ready or what specific thing will spark their interest. We need to constantly stand as a beacon of light in their lives. Not ever giving up.

Invite your family to color the life preserver as you explain that the Third Principle, "How Great Shall Be Your Joy If You Bring Save It Be One Soul unto Christ".  Ask your family members how excited they were when they found one of the paper sheep? Invite them to think about each neighbor, each person they see in the grocery store as a daughter or son of Heavenly Father. As their eternal brother or sister. What if they would bring one of then unto Christ? How would they feel?

Activity: Explain that we can be that life preserver in someones life. Give each family member a small piece of paper and invite them to write something they could do onto that piece of paper. Before hand make a life preserver our of a paper plate (cut a large hole in the center of the paper plate and color some red stripes.) Have one person hold the paper plate life preserver while the other family members say what they wrote then they can crumple it into at ball and throw it through the middle of the life preserver.

Invite your family to color in the life boat, while your explain the Fourth Principle, "No Matter Our Age, We Are All Called to Go to the Rescue". Share this quote by President Gordon B. Hinkley,

“Whatever our age, capacity, Church calling, or location, we are as one called to the work to help [the Savior] in His harvest of souls until He comes again.”

Play the following video and invite your family to point out the different ways each family reached out to others.
