Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Show your family the word strip, "We Believe". Discuss what it means to believe in something.

Next, show the word strip, "that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are:" Discuss as a family what principles and ordinances are. Example: A principle is "A basic doctrine, truth, or law." (The Guide to the Scriptures)  Ordinances are "Sacred rites and ceremonies. Ordinances consist of acts that have spiritual meanings. Ordinances can also mean God’s laws and statutes." (The Guide to the Scriptures)

Place two word strips on the floor/table or up on a board. The first word strip says, Principles, The second word strip says, Ordinances.  Invite your family members to help you put the following four word strips under the correct column.

Show the word strip "first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ;"  Discuss if this is a principle or and ordinance, place it under the correct column (Principle).  Discuss as a family what it means to have "Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ"? What are some ways we can show our faith?  What blessings will we receive as we demonstrate our faith in the Savior?

Then, show the word strip "second, Repentance;" Discuss if this is a principle or and ordinance, place it under the correct column (Principle).  Discuss as a family what it means to repent.  Why is it important to repent?  Discuss the atonement, as well as the steps of repentance.

Then, show the word strip "third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins;" Discuss if this is a principle or and ordinance, place it under the correct column (ordinance).  Discuss as a family the importance of baptism by immersion.  Discussion might include the example of the Savior as he was baptized by immersion. It also may include that baptism by immersion is an essential ordinance, meaning it must be completed before being able to enter the celestial kingdom. (The Guide to the Scriptures)

Then, show the word strip "fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."  Discuss if this is a principle or and ordinance, place it under the correct column (ordinance). Discuss as a family the huge blessing that one receives as they are given the gift of the Holy Ghost.  What does laying on of hands mean? What is the Holy Ghost and why do we want him for our constant companion?

Explain that in the fourth article of faith each of these things are in order, because first we must have faith in the Jesus Christ, before we can practice repentance.  We must repent, before we participate in the ordinance of baptism and then after we are baptized we are able to be confirmed members of His church and receive the Holy Ghost as our constant companion.
