Family Home Evening on The What, Why and How's of Baptism?

One of my boys is about to turn eight and has made the decision to be baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  So, to help prepare him for this sacred ordinance we are going to be focusing our Family Home Evenings this month on baptism.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:

The What, Why and How's of Baptism?

Free Printable:

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest. On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.  A great resource to help prepare in teaching about baptism is "What is Baptism?"

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Show the video: "The Baptism of Jesus".  Discuss the video as a family.

Show the word strip, "What?" Invite discussion on what baptism by immersion is.  Discussion may include this quote from the True to the Faith (2004: Baptism pg 21-26):

"Baptism is the first saving ordinance of the gospel (see Articles of Faith 1:4). Through baptism and confirmation by priesthood authority, you became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

When you were baptized, you showed your willingness to follow the Savior’s example. He too was baptized, even though He was without sin. As He explained to John the Baptist, He needed to be baptized in order to “fulfil all righteousness” (see Matthew 3:13–17)."

Show the word strip, "Why?"  Invite discussion on why we should be baptized member's of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  This discussion may include.  That it is part of our Heavenly Father's plan.  That it is a saving ordinance, which means it is an ordinance we need to return to our Heavenly Father's presence. It is the ordinance necessary to become a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  The why part is also very personal.  The why includes our own desire and motives of being baptized. It is a desire to follow our Savior's example. It is a desire to follow our Father's plan to return to live with him again someday.

Show the word strip, "How?" Invite discussion on how we should be baptized.  Discussion might include: That baptism by immersion means that the person being baptized goes completely under the water.  Discussion might also include the proper authority.  That the baptism should be performed by a worthy male who holds the Aaronic Priesthood.

Read the following scripture about baptism: “The person who is called of God and has authority from Jesus Christ to baptize, shall go down into the water with the person who has presented himself or herself for baptism, and shall say, calling him or her by name: Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen.

“Then shall he immerse him or her in the water, and come forth again out of the water” (D&C 20:73–74).

Bear your testimony on the importance of being baptized and the blessing it is in your life, invite other members of the family who have been baptized to do the same.

Close with a Family Prayer.
