Sharing Time Instruction:

Begin sharing time by inviting a child to come to the front of the room. Place a backpack on their back that has some big rocks or cans of soup (with the above labels attached to them) placed in it.  Ask the child if the bag is a little heavy, if it has placed a little bit more pressure on their shoulders?  Explain to the primary children that sometimes things happen to us, like a friend might say a mean word to us, or your brother might push you and make you fall. Those things can make us feel bad. When we hang onto those feelings then it starts to weigh us down.  Ask the children if they know what they can do to get rid of those feelings?  Invite another child to come up and hold the word poster and invite the children to say, "Forgiveness Brings Peace".  Explain that as we forgive others of the wrongs they do to us, then the weight of bad feelings is lifted and we are able to feel peace.  Explain that we do not have to wait for the person to say sorry for us to forgive them.  Heavenly Father asks us to forgive freely.

Reach into the bag and pull out one of the cans or rocks. Read the phrase that is on it and invite a child to come up and hold the correlating picture.  Invite a child or teacher to read the scripture that accompanies it. Discuss how forgiveness was used in the scripture and the peace it brought.  Continue with each rock/can, until the bag is empty.  Ask the child if the load has been lightened?  Bear your testimony that about forgiveness and the peace that comes from it. Then if time allows invite any primary children or teachers who would like to share their testimonies or examples of forgiveness.

Here are the phrases that can be on the rocks/cans and their correlating pictures and scriptures (see printables above):

-  "Jesus forgives on the cross" (Luke 23:13–34) Picture of Jesus Crucifixion: Discuss how Jesus forgave those who persecuted and crucified him and he asked Heavenly Father to forgive them also.

-  "Nephi forgives his brothers" (1 Nephi 7:16–21) Picture of Nephi fleeing Jerusalem  (this picture doesn't go directly with the scripture, but does show Nephi and his brothers) Discuss how Nephi forgave  his brothers of the things they had done to him. Then asked them to seek forgiveness from their Heavenly Father.

-  Joseph forgives his brothers (Genesis 45:3-15) Picture of Joseph Forgiving his brothers
Discuss how Joseph forgave his brothers for selling him and gave much to them.
