Family Home Evening based on the April 2014 General Conference talk, "The Cost—and Blessings—of Discipleship", BY ELDER JEFFREY R. HOLLAND
I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family. Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest." On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.
Welcome everyone to Family Night
Sing: "Stand for the Right" Children's Song Book Pg 159
Have a member of the family member say the prayer
Discuss any family business
Follow-up with last weeks FHE.
Introduce this weeks Topic: "The Cost—and Blessings—of Discipleship", BY ELDER JEFFREY R. HOLLAND
Scripture: Read and Mark: 1 Nephi 19:9
Article of Faith: #7: "We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth." (Pearl of Great Price)
Family Home Evening Instruction:
Begin Family Home Evening by inviting one of your family member's to read the story about the sister missionaries found in the April 2014 General Conference Talk, "The Cost—and Blessings—of Discipleship", BY ELDER JEFFREY R. HOLLAND:
“My companion and I saw a man sitting on a bench in the town square eating his lunch. As we drew near, he looked up and saw our missionary name tags. With a terrible look in his eye, he jumped up and raised his hand to hit me. I ducked just in time, only to have him spit his food all over me and start swearing the most horrible things at us. We walked away saying nothing. I tried to wipe the food off of my face, only to feel a clump of mashed potato hit me in the back of the head. Sometimes it is hard being a missionary because right then I wanted to go back, grab that little man, and say, ‘EXCUSE ME!’ But I didn’t.”
Invite a member of the family to read this quote by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland from the same General Conference talk,
"With admiration and encouragement for everyone who will need to remain steadfast in these latter days, I say to all and especially the youth of the Church that if you haven’t already, you will one day find yourself called upon to defend your faith or perhaps even endure some personal abuse simply because you are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Such moments will require both courage and courtesy on your part."
Discuss with your family ways you can have courage to stand up for your beliefs and remain steadfast. Also, discuss why it is important to show courtesy to others and how to do so.
Continue to read,
"Be strong. Live the gospel faithfully even if others around you don’t live it at all. Defend your beliefs with courtesy and with compassion, but defend them. A long history of inspired voices, including those you will hear in this conference and the voice you just heard in the person of President Thomas S. Monson, point you toward the path of Christian discipleship. It is a strait path, and it is a narrow path without a great deal of latitude at some points, but it can be thrillingly and successfully traveled, “with … steadfastness in Christ, … a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men.”( 2 Nephi 31:20). In courageously pursuing such a course, you will forge unshakable faith, you will find safety against ill winds that blow, even shafts in the whirlwind, and you will feel the rock-like strength of our Redeemer, upon whom if you build your unflagging discipleship, you cannot fall."
Invite a member of the family to come up and stand on one foot. As they do so gently pull them towards you. In doing so they will not be able to remain on the one leg they will fall forward or they will put the other leg down. Then invite them to stand there with two feet firmly planted on the ground, as you gently full them forward they will not fall forward as easily. But will be able to stand there. Explain that when we have both feet firmly planted in the gospel trying to keep all of our Heavenly Father's commandments we will be able to have a stronger testimony, an unwavering testimony. This will help us as we are faced with instances where we need to stand up for our beliefs or endure persecution.
Discuss with your family how our Savior was the perfect example to us. He served his Father in Heaven in all that he did throughout his life. He was unwavering as he lived the gospel and taught of it. Even as he was ridiculed, questioned, experienced physical pains, rejection and ultimately death. He remained firm in his teachings and beliefs and did so with unconditional love. He had a knowledge of the grand plan of the Father and understood his role in that plan.
Give each family member a piece of paper and have them write somethings they can do each day to strengthen their testimonies so they can be better disciples of the Savior. Encourage them to keep the paper where they will be able to view it and to do the things they have written. So, when the time comes when they will be faced with having to stand up for their beliefs, they will be able to do so with both feet firmly set in the gospel and their testimony strong and unwavering.
Read,
"And therein lies a message for every young man and young woman in this Church. You may wonder if it is worth it to take a courageous moral stand in high school or to go on a mission only to have your most cherished beliefs reviled or to strive against much in society that sometimes ridicules a life of religious devotion. Yes, it is worth it, because the alternative is to have our “houses” left unto us “desolate”—desolate individuals, desolate families, desolate neighborhoods, and desolate nations." -"The Cost—and Blessings—of Discipleship", BY ELDER JEFFREY R. HOLLAND
Invite family members to bear their testimonies about being a disciple of Christ no matter the cost and the blessings that come from doing so.

LDS Come Follow Me Lesson and Mutual Ideas July 2014: Ordinances and Covenants
For July 2014 the topic for "Come Follow Me" is,
"Ordinances and Covenants"
Here are the links to each organizations page for the month: Young Women, Aaronic Priesthood, Sunday School
Since, each organization has their own outlines and each lesson will need to be specified to the individual class members and there are already amazing outlines that can be used for guidance, I am only going to share some general ideas that can just be used as supplements.
Here is the Scripture for the month:
“In the ordinances ... the power of godliness is manifest” (D&C 84:20).
Lesson Ideas:
There are so many topics to choose from this month. I am just giving supplemental ideas to a few of them. Please refer to the church's website for the wonderful outlines they have on there for all of the topics, see links below.
- Why are ordinances important in my life? Here is a great link about ordinances and why they are important. This talk, "Do We Know What We Have?"
BY CAROLE M. STEPHENS, could be used both for this topic and the topic about covenants. Invite class members to share the ordinances they have taken part in and their experiences as well as sharing your own.
BY CAROLE M. STEPHENS, could be used both for this topic and the topic about covenants. Invite class members to share the ordinances they have taken part in and their experiences as well as sharing your own.
- Why are covenants important in my life? Here is a great link about Covenants. I did a FHE post a little while back on covenants, it could easily be adapted to a class lesson. Here is the link to the post, free printable.
- Why are temple ordinances important? "Temple Ordinances and Blessings", was in the July 2009 New Era Magazine, quotes could be cut out and read by class members and discussed as a group.
- What does it mean to take upon myself the name of Jesus Christ? Whenever I think of this topic the song, "What Have I Done With His Name?" by Kenneth Cope comes to my mind. The song speaks of the names we are given and the names we choose to take upon ourselves. One of these names being the Savior's name as become members of his church. The lyrics to the song can be found here on Kenneth Cope's website, part of the chorus can also be listened to from that site.
- How can I help others have a meaningful experience with the sacrament? Here is the direct link to the outline for this topic.
- What is the oath and covenant of the priesthood? "The Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood", CARLOS E. ASAY, is a great General Conference talk on the oath and the covenant.
- What spiritual truths can I learn from the ordinances of the gospel? Give each class member a words strip that has on it an ordinance and a scripture about that ordinance. Ask them to each take a couple minutes to look the scripture up, read it and ponder it. Then invite each member to explain what spiritual truths they can or have learned from that particular ordinance.
- How can I deepen my understanding of covenants? Explain that a covenant is a spiritual contact between one's self and Heavenly Father. It is a two-way promise. What happens when one of the people break a contract? The contract becomes void. Invite class member to discuss what they promise Heavenly Father as they make specific covenants such as, baptism, sacrament, priesthood oath and covenant and marriage sealing and covenant. Then discuss what Heavenly Father promises for each. Explain that Heavenly Father is bound to keep his promise if we keep ours. But if we break our promise then he is no longer bound to keep his.
- How can I make the sacrament more meaningful to me? Here is a link to a FHE I did on renewing our covenants during the sacrament. It worked great to emphasize preparing for the sacrament during the week and then what we should be doing during the sacrament. It is a nice reminder for everyone.
- How can I prepare to receive temple ordinances? Here is a sharing time I did recently that could be adapted to a Sunday School lesson. I remember being a Young Women and having a lesson on preparing for the temple. We were each given a small paper that had some things we promised to do to prepare for our temple ordinances. We were to sign it and then it was placed into a temple recommend holder. To help remind us of our goal and what we promised to do to get there.
Idea's for Mutual:
Here is a link to the Youth Activities Planning Site.
One Idea is that you could have a spiritual night focused on the ordinance path: Baptism and Confirmation, Sacrament, Priesthood Ordination (for Young men), Temple Endowment, Marriage Sealing. Maybe each area in the Cultural Hall or each class room could have a station where there could be a speaker or story/lesson taught on each ordinance.
Another Idea would be TEMPLE Trip. Meeting with the temple President and Matron. Baptisms for the Dead. Or seeing before hand if their is any cleaning or of the temple grounds the youth could do.

6th Article of Faith Poster
Labels to put on Blocks & This Week's Theme Poster
Sharing Time Instruction:
Begin sharing time by inviting the children to repeat or sing the sixth Article of Faith together. (See printable above) Explain that the sixth Article of Faith explains that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized the same way as when Christ was on the earth.
Show the children a picture of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Ask the children who the picture is of and what they know about the person in the picture? Emphasize that the Church of Jesus Christ was restored through the Prophet Joseph Smith.
Show the children a picture of Jesus teaching the people. Explain that when Jesus was on the Earth "He organized His Church with priesthood leadership and true doctrines." (2014 Outline for Sharing Time).
Show a child a block explain that on the block is either a priesthood leadership position or a true doctrine. Have one of the children read it and place it on the table. Pull out another block and do the same. Building upon the blocks until a little pyramid like structure is built. Explain that the structure represents the Church of Jesus Christ.
Show the children a picture of Jesus Christ's Atonement, Crucifixion and Resurrection. Then knock down the blocks. Ask the children if they know what happened after Jesus was crucified? Explain that after Jesus was crucified and resurrected and his apostles died, men began to corrupt and make unauthorized changes to the gospel. The Lord took the authority of the priesthood from the earth, this is known as the apostasy.
Show a picture of Joseph Smith and the First Vision. Ask the children what happened in this picture. Start to build the structure back up, using all of the same blocks as before. Show the children then poster of this weeks theme (see printable above), invite the children to repeat, "The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored." Explain that Heavenly Father restored the true church, the same organization that existed when Christ was on the earth, through the Prophet Joseph Smith. When we are Baptized we take the Savior's name upon us and become member's of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, His Church.

LDS Primary Sharing Time June 2014 5th Sunday Ideas
There are five Sundays in June, one of these Sundays was Father's Day. Our primary presidency in our ward decided to do a special Father's Day sharing time on Father's Day. By doing this we were able to use the given topics for the other weeks. I thought I would do a quick little post giving some ideas for the fifth Sunday, just in case all of your weeks topics have already been all used up.
Links to Some Ideas for June 2014 5th Sunday Sharing Time:
Family Home Evening on Priesthood Ordinances and Temple Work Bless My Family (June 2014 LDS Primary Topic): This could be easily adapted to a Sharing Time
July 2013 Sharing Time- Week 4- Heavenly Father wants me to marry in the temple and have an eternal family

LDS Primary Sharing Time June 2014 Week 4: Family history work connects me to my ancestors.
As with most Sharing Time Ideas, this one can be adapted to a Family Home Evening...
Since June has five Sundays as a presidency we decided to have a Father's Day sharing time the 3rd week which is June 15th. Which means it shifted all of the sharing times down. This is what we have planned for our sharing time schedule for June 2014: June 1st: Week 1 Priesthood ordinances bless and strengthen my family. June 8th: Week 2 Temples make it possible for families to be together forever. June 15th: Father's Day Sharing Time. June 22nd Week 3: I can prepare now to be worthy to enter the temple. June 29th Week 4: Family history work connects me to my ancestors.

Sharing Time Instruction:
Begin sharing time by inviting a few children to come up to act out a story from your family history or you could use this story, "The China Doll" BY BARBARA HONEY. Use props to make it fun for the kids as you read the story. Or even better, invite the Family History Consultant in your ward or branch to have a story that the children could act out and have them come help with this part of the sharing time.
Invite the children to learn the song "Family History - I Am Doing It" Found in the Children's Songbook pg 94. Use the posters above to help teach the children the song. Sing a line and have them sing the line back to you. Continue with all lines then sing the whole song together.
Ask the primary children what the song says we feel as we take part in Family History work? Answer: LOVE. Ask the children what we do when we do Family History work? We learn stories of our ancestors, we write their history as well as our own, we write our own experiences in journals, we research names, we gather photos, we make sure each one of our ancestors who have passed on ordinance work has been completed, and if not then we prepare it and do it for them.
Invite a primary child to read: “And thus my father, Lehi, did discover the genealogy of his fathers. . . . And now when my father saw all these things, he was filled with the Spirit.” (1 Nephi 5:16-17)
Explain that we are filled with the spirit as we do family history work and become more connected to our ancestors.
Give each primary child a handout. Explain that you would like them to fill out the info on the left hand side about themselves including drawing a picture of themselves. Then on the right hand side they will need to go home and find out the info about one of their ancestors. Have them see what the similarities and differences they might have with a particular ancestor.

Family Home Evening on Developing Talents (passes off a Faith in God Requirement)
Sing: "Give, Said the Little Stream" Children's Song Book Pg 236
Have a member of the family member say the prayer
Discuss any family business
Follow-up with last weeks FHE.
Introduce this weeks Topic: Developing Talents (passes off a Faith in God Requirement)
Scripture: Read and Mark: D&C 82:18
Article of Faith: #6: "We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth."
Family Home Evening Instruction:
Begin family night by giving each family member a certain amount of "Talent Cards". For example: you might give one family member one and another family member 2 and another 5. (Before hand you should have written talents on the cards, I left them blank so if you had specif talents for a certain person you could do that) Have each family member read their cards and think about the talent they have been given. Then ask each family member if they would be willing to share that talent. If a family member decides to share their talent give them another talent. If they choose not to share that talent, take that talent away and give it to the person with the most talents.
Play the video "The Parable of the Talents".
Explain that Heavenly Father has given each of us talents. It is our choice to either hide the talents we have been given or to develop and share our talents with others. If we hide our talents then we will loose them. If we develop and share our talents then we will gain more talents and will be further blessed.
"We may look on our daily work merely as chores. However, when we perform these tasks in a spirit of loving service to husband, children, family, and friends, we bring joy to ourselves and others. To cook a tasteful meal, study for a class, cultivate a garden, write a letter, kindly encourage a friend or family member—all these efforts are improving talents.
God then grants an increase by blessing us with new talents. Often these are qualities of character. We learn to understand the needs of those we serve and to show patience, affection, tolerance, and generosity." ("Talents Are for Sharing" from the October 1993 Liahona magazine)
Share these ideas for developing talents:
Found in "Idea List: Unearthing Your Talents" from Sept. 1998 New Era Magazine.
• Spend some time each day perfecting a talent or skill you already have.
• Don’t be afraid to try new things.
• Read your patriarchal blessing to see what natural gifts are mentioned there.
• Expose yourself to new activities. If you generally excel in sports, try something in the arts, or vice versa.
• Read about the qualities the Savior possessed, such as charity, selflessness, and forgiveness. Since we all have the ability to eventually become like him, we should work diligently on developing these Christlike attributes.
• Pray that the Lord will help make your weakness into strength as he promised in Ether 12:27.
• Choose someone you admire to be your role model and find out what they did to develop their talents.
• Participate in the New Era contest this year.
• Choose a project in the Young Women, Duty to God Award, or Scouting programs that is different from the projects or values you usually choose. This is a great way to introduce yourself to new activities.
• Look to your roots to see what talents your ancestors had. This could give you clues as to what natural abilities you may have, since some talents are inherited.
• Plan to look semi-ridiculous while trying new things. It’s bound to happen. You may find you don’t have a natural knack for certain activities, but by trying new things, you’ll be gaining courage and the ability to laugh at yourself.
Explain that as a family we are going to learn a new talent together. Teach each family member how to lead and sing the song, "I am a Child of God" from the Children's Songbook.
Invite each family member to fill out the "I will Develop and Share my Talents" paper (see below printable).
Invite family members to bear their testimonies about how developing talents helps prepare us for service to Heavenly Father and others.
