Family Home Evening on Getting Ready for the School Year

I always like to do a family home evening focused on the new school year right before school.  It is a time to review the policies and rules of the classroom and school. Set goals and discuss things that might occur during the year.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is: Getting Ready for the School Year. This could also help towards fulfilling Faith in God activity #6 under Developing Talents. Also in the Webelos Cub Scout book there is the Scholar Requirement that could be worked on.

Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

Print out the "BEST" poster and the goal setting sheets.  Be prepared to show the videos.

Scripture: Read: D&C 88:118 "And as all have not faith, seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith." (Discuss what it means to "seek learning, even by study ad also by faith".)

Article of Faith: #8"We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God."(Pearl of Great Price)

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin Family Home Evening by showing the family the "BEST" poster.  Explain and discuss the poster as a family.  Explain that when we have a positive attitude and try our best we will be more likely to succeed and accomplish our goals.

Play the video: "Focus on Education"  Discuss the importance or learning and gaining an education.

Review policies and class room and school rules.  The importance of being a good student, treating teachers and classmates with respect.

Discuss any concerns that any one in the family has about school.

Discuss how to be a good friend and the importance of seeking good friends with the same values. Discuss how important it is to be kind and respectful to everyone.

Play the video: "Bullying - Stop It"  Discuss how important it is to remember that we are all our Heavenly Father's children. It should be our purpose to lift each other up, not tear each other down. Discuss what to do if they see someone being bullied or experience being bullied themselves.

Invite each family member to set a goal for this upcoming school year.  Use the "My Study Plan" printable to write down some goals about studying. Discuss how important it is to also seek our Heavenly Father's help, through prayer and priesthood blessings to help us in our studies.

Invite family members to bear their testimonies about the importance of obtaining and working hard to gain a good education.

Close with a Family Prayer.
