February 2017 Scripture: “If ye do keep his commandments he doth bless you and prosper you” (Mosiah 2:22).

February 2017 Song:  “Choose the Right” (Hymns, no. 239)

February Week 4 Topic: Church members today are blessed for choosing the right.

Preparation:

Prayerfully study and think about what the specific needs of your primary are and how you can teach them this doctrine.

Sharing Time Instruction:

Begin primary by having the primary children sing the song, "Choose the Right Way".  Ask the primary children what the song says will happen if we choose the right??  It says we will be happy!!

Show the primary children the week's theme poster and invite them to repeat, "Church members today are blessed for choosing the right."

Explain that throughout the month, they have been learning about ancient prophets who choose the right and how they were blessed for choosing the right.  We are also blessed as we choose the right.

Up on the board have these 5 posters, "Pioneer Ancestors", "Latter-day Prophet Story", "Parent Story", "Child Story", "Your Story".

Invite a primary child to come up and choose one of the posters. Whichever poster they choose, read the story about how that person choose the right and was blessed.

Discuss with the children that this person lived in the latter-days after the gospel of Jesus Christ was restored to the earth. Discuss what they did to choose the right and how they were blessed for choosing the right.

Continue inviting a child to choose a poster, read and discuss, each  story & poster.

After you have discussed each poster, reiterate that we will be blessed for Choosing the Right!! The blessings come when we are righteous, remember the song we sung at the start, when we choose the right way we will be happy.

Share you testimony and invite the primary children to put Choosing the Right to the test. Choose the Right and notice the blessings and happiness you'll have.

Pioneer Ancestors Chose the Right and Were Blessed:
Mary Fielding Smith’s Cattle Are Stolen

"After Joseph Smith and his brother Hyrum were martyred, Hyrum’s wife, Mary Fielding Smith, left Nauvoo and traveled to Winter Quarters with her children and several other people she and Hyrum had taken into their home.

While at Winter Quarters, Mary and some of her family traveled south into Missouri to get supplies for the journey west. Bad weather made it difficult to travel, and the oxen had difficulty pulling the full, heavy wagons. The journey to Missouri took one week, but the journey back to Winter Quarters took much longer.

On the way back, Mary and her family camped near the Missouri River. Camping nearby were some men who were driving a herd of cattle to market. Mary’s son, Joseph F., and his uncle usually unyoked their oxen at night so the oxen could eat and rest more easily, but because they were so close to the other herd of cattle they left the yokes on the oxen. That way the oxen would be easy to find if they got mixed in with the other animals.

The next morning some of the oxen were missing. Joseph F. and his uncle spent all morning looking for them, but they could not find them. As Joseph F. returned to the camp, tired and discouraged, he saw his mother kneeling in prayer. He heard her asking the Lord to help them find the lost oxen so they could continue their journey in safety.

When Mary finished her prayer, she had a smile on her face. Although her brother said the cattle were surely gone for good, Mary said she would go out and look for a while. Her brother tried to convince her that he and Joseph F. had searched everywhere and it was useless for her to search also, but she went anyway.

As Mary walked away from her camp, one of the men taking the cattle to market called out, “Madam, I saw your oxen over in that direction this morning about daybreak.” Although the man was pointing in the opposite direction, Mary continued walking toward the river. Joseph F. was watching her, and he came running when she beckoned to him. When he came near her, he saw their oxen tied to a clump of willows. Someone had hidden them, probably with the intention of stealing them. With their oxen found, Mary Fielding Smith and her family were able to continue their journey. (See Don Cecil Corbett, Mary Fielding Smith: Daughter of Britain, pp. 209–13.)" (Primary 5 Manual Lesson 42)

Latter-day Prophets choose the right and are blessed:
“Tommy” Monson learned important lessons as a boy.

“I remember that our deportment in Primary was not always as it should be. I had a lot of energy and found it difficult to sit patiently in a class. Melissa Georgell was our ward Primary president. One day she asked me if I would visit with her. We sat on the front row of the benches in the chapel, and she began to cry. She then told me that she was sad because the boys in particular did not behave during Primary opening exercises. Innocently, I asked, ‘May I help, Sister Georgell?’

“With a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye, she responded, ‘Would you?’

“I told her I would. The Primary’s disciplinary problems ceased that moment,” he laughs, explaining that he had been part of the challenge. (Thomas S. Monson)"

President Monson choose the right to help Sister Georgell, he was blessed because of his choice and so was his class.

Parent's Choose the Right and are Blessed:
For this one you could ask a parent to share a story or you can use the one below.

"Our youngest daughter, Abby, saw a unique opportunity to stand as a defender of the role of mother. One day she got a notice from her children’s school that they were having Career Day presentations at the school. Parents were invited to send in an application if they wanted to come to school to teach the children about their jobs, and Abby felt impressed to apply to come and speak about motherhood. She didn’t hear back from the school, and when Career Day was getting close, she finally called the school, thinking they may have lost her application. The organizers scrambled around and found two teachers who agreed to have Abby come talk to their classes at the end of Career Day.

In her very fun presentation to the children, Abby taught them, among other things, that as a mother she needed to be somewhat of an expert in medicine, psychology, religion, teaching, music, literature, art, finance, decorating, hair styling, chauffeuring, sports, culinary arts, and so much more. The children were impressed. She finished by having the children remember their mothers by writing thank-you notes expressing gratitude for the many loving acts of service they received daily. Abby felt that the children saw their mothers in a whole new light and that being a mother or father was something of great worth. She applied to share again this year at Career Day and was invited to present to six classes." (Defenders of the Family Proclamation)

Because Abby choose the right in defend her important role as a mother, she blessed the lives of the children who were taught the importance of being a parent.

Children Choose the Right and are Blessed:
Trying to Be Like Jesus Christ- Friend Magazine

"Hello. My name is Corbett Carrel. I am eleven years old and in the fifth grade. I enjoy school very much and love academic challenges. When my teacher, Mr. Scullin, explained to our class that we would each have the opportunity to compete in a geography bee, I became very excited. I was hopeful that I would perform well and have the opportunity to advance to the second level.

On the first day of the competition, I did very well, answering four out of six questions correctly. I was very encouraged about the competition. On the second day, I was given the final question of the round. Needless to say, I was nervous. At this point I was in second place and needed to answer the final question correctly in order to advance to the next level.

The time had arrived. It was my turn. When I was able to answer the question given to me correctly, I was very excited. I was in a strong position to move to the next level. But I knew that I had had an unfair advantage. I had accidently seen the answer to that question earlier in the day on my teacher’s answer sheet. I had a difficult decision to make. I knew deep inside that I had to choose the right, just like my CTR ring reminds me to do every day.

At the end of the school day, I went to my teacher and explained the situation to him. He was very impressed with my honesty. He was so impressed that he gave me two additional questions to answer. Unfortunately I did not know the answers and did not advance to the second level. I was disappointed but felt good inside about my decision to choose the right.

That night I told my mom about the geography bee. She said that she was very proud of my choice and so was Jesus. Advancing to the next level would not have been worth it. I know my choice was right and that I was really a winner." (Trying to Be Like Jesus Christ)

You Choose the Right and are Blessed:
For this one, invite them primary children to think of times in their own lives where they have chosen the right and have been blessed because of it. Invite the primary children to share their examples with the rest of the primary.
