For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:
The Holy Ghost can comfort us and guide us through the darkness.
Preparation: I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family. Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest." On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.
Invite a member of the family member say the prayer
Discuss any family business

Family Home Evening Instruction:
In this FHE I have used some quotes from 2015 October General Conference address, "The Holy Ghost as Your Companion", by By President Henry B. Eyring
To begin, invite each of your family members to close their eyes and keep them closed until you invite them to open them. Ask them what they see?? They may say they see darkness or blackness. Have them still close their eyes as you explain that there is so much confusion in the word that sometimes we might feel lost in the darkness. We may hear voices telling us to do things contrary to that which our Heavenly Father would like us to do. It seems we are being pulled in many directions and sometimes we might loose sight of the eternal perspective of things. But, if we listen really closely coming to us out of the darkness and confusion is the Holy Ghost. Play, "The Still Small Voice" Children's songbook pg 106. Invite you family members to now open their eyes.
Invite your family to tell you what they know about the Holy Ghost. (Some of the things that they might say are, that he is a member of the Godhead, we receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost after we are baptized and when we are confirmed a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, He does not have a body of flesh and bones, he is a spirit, the Holy Ghost comforts us, guides us, teaches us, warns us, testifies of the Savior and Heavenly Father, etc.)
Explain that when we are baptized the Holy Ghost can be our constant companion. Which means as long as we don't offend him, he will always be there with us. Read the following quote by President Eyring,
"The companionship of the Holy Ghost makes what is good more attractive and temptation less compelling. That alone should be enough to make us determined to qualify for the Spirit to be with us always.
Just as the Holy Ghost strengthens us against evil, He also gives us the power to discern truth from falsehood. The truth that matters most is verified only by revelation from God. Our human reason and the use of our physical senses will not be enough. We live in a time when even the wisest will be hard-pressed to distinguish truth from clever deception.
Close by sharing your testimony and inviting family members to share their's also."
Invite your family to share ways the Holy Ghost, speaks to them? (Answers may include: In our hearts, sometimes we receive a warm, good, peaceful feeling inside; In our minds, sometimes we will have a thought come to our mind; and sometimes we will actually hear a voice, the Holy Ghost instructing us.
Read another quote by Presiden Eyring:
"As you obey, the impressions from the Spirit will come more frequently, becoming closer and closer to constant companionship. Your power to choose the right will increase."
Share an experience of when you have listened to and obeyed the impressions from the Spirit. Invite you family members to share theirs as well.
ACTIVITY:
Make a small obstacle course, blindfold one of your family member and choose another family member to be the whisperer. Instruct the blindfolded family member that they will need to listen very carefully and to only that family member's voice as they instruct them how to make it through the course successfully. Continue with each family member who would like to participate.
Close with a Family Prayer.

Another great FHE for Halloween time is:
I love how you incorporated Halloween with a Family Home Evening lesson!
ReplyDeleteThanks Heather, it's fun to celebrate and learn at the same time, right ;)
DeleteGreat FHE idea. My kids would love the obstacle course. Thanks! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Sheena!
DeleteI like the way you explained the obstacle course. When I was a youth and we did this activity, they didn't explain anything so when it was my turn and a leader that I recognized and trusted told me to do something, I did! Why wouldn't I? Turns out that I was stuck there forever as a result. It's a good activity though.
ReplyDeleteThanks Camille :) Oh man, no fair to use someone you trusted :)
DeleteGreat FHE idea!
