Family Home Evening on Families Are Blessed When They Follow the Prophet (May 2014 Sharing time theme)

I hope and pray that you can use these ideas as a guideline and adjust them to the needs of your own specific family.  Our prophet President Monson says, "We cannot afford to neglect this heaven-inspired program. It can bring spiritual growth to each member of the family, helping him or her to withstand the temptations which are everywhere. The lessons learned in the home are those that last the longest."  On Lds.org there are resources available in helping to make your Family Home Evenings successful, here is a link to that site on Family Home Evenings.

For tonight's Family Home Evening the topic in which I have chosen is:  Families Are Blessed When They Follow the Prophet (May 2014 Sharing time theme)

Preparation: Before FHE read the ideas in May 2014 Friend Magazine, HERE is a link. Prepare to set out a blanket large enough for everyone to sit on. This could be placed inside or outside of the house.  Prepare to read and discuss  Mosiah 2:1, 6-8. Also, prepare to read and discuss on of the most recent General Conference talks by the current prophet.  If you would like their is a printable below that could be framed and put in each family member's room or just printed and used as a bookmark for their scriptures.

Scripture: Read and Mark: 2 Peter 3:2

Article of Faith: #5We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.

Family Home Evening Instruction:

Begin family home evening by inviting every family member to come and sit on the blanket together. Hand one of the family member's a crown to wear and have them read from The Book of Mormon: Mosiah 2:1, 6-8

1 And it came to pass that after Mosiah had done as his father had commanded him, and had made a proclamation throughout all the land, that the people gathered themselves together throughout all the land, that they might go up to the temple to hear the words which king Benjamin should speak unto them...

...6 And they pitched their tents round about the temple, every man having his tent with the door thereof towards the temple, that thereby they might remain in their tents and hear the words which king Benjamin should speak unto them;

7 For the multitude being so great that king Benjamin could not teach them all within the walls of the temple, therefore he caused a tower to be erected, that thereby his people might hear the words which he should speak unto them.

8 And it came to pass that he began to speak to his people from the tower; and they could not all hear his words because of the greatness of the multitude; therefore he caused that the words which he spake should be written and sent forth among those that were not under the sound of his voice, that they might also receive his words."

Explain to you family that King Benjamin was a prophet and that as he spoke to the mulitiude he told them things that Heavenly Father wanted them to hear.  Explain that we are so blessed, that we are able to read instructions that Heavenly Father has given us through ancient prophets and that we have a living prophet on the earth today that gives us the guidence and direction that Heavenly Father knows we need to keep us safely on the path that returns to him.

Just like in king Benjamins day, the multitude of people that want to hear the prophet's words are so great in number, that we could not all gather together in the same place.  We are very blessed to be able to have the technology to view and listen to the prophet during General Conference.  And just as king Benjamin did, the prophets words are written down. They are written in the Ensign and Liahona magazines so we can read and re-read the words of the prophet and leaders of the church and be able to receive the person revelation we need in our lives.

Give each member of the family a copy of the most recent General Conference talk given by the prophet.  Here are some links to the talks given by President Monson during the April 2014 General Conference:

-  "Welcome to Conference", BY PRESIDENT THOMAS S. MONSON

- "Be Strong and of a Good Courage", BY PRESIDENT THOMAS S. MONSON

- "Love—the Essence of the Gospel", BY PRESIDENT THOMAS S. MONSON

- "Until We Meet Again", BY PRESIDENT THOMAS S. MONSON

Read the talk as a family. Discuss how your family will be blessed by following the council given by the prophet.

Bear testimonies on how Families are blessed when they follow the prophet.

Close with a Family Prayer.
